Uzanne, Octave (1851-1931) Son Altesse La Femme [Her Highness the Woman] [Extra-Illustrated State] [Salvatore David Master Binding] [Cortlandt Field Bishop Provenance] A FRENCH BIBLIOPHILE’S VISION TRANSFORMED INTO A MASTERWORK OF BINDING, ILLUSTRATION, AND COLLECTING HISTORY.
$1,500.00
A remarkable example of late nineteenth-century French bookmaking, uniting the literary vision of Octave Uzanne with a master binding by Salvatore David and documented ownership by important American collector Cortlandt Field Bishop.
This limited edition of Son Altesse La Femme represents the height of Belle Époque bibliophilic culture, combining essays on femininity, fashion, and cultural identity with an elaborate program of illustration and ornament. The present copy is distinguished by its exceptional binding and an additional suite of ten vignette illustrations printed separately without text, representing an enhanced illustrated state beyond the standard issue.
THE BEAUTIFUL BOOK OF FIN-DE-SIÈCLE PARIS.
Octave Uzanne was one of the most distinctive figures in nineteenth-century French literary and bibliophilic circles. His works transformed subjects such as fashion, collecting, and social customs into highly designed literary objects that reflected the artistic ambitions of the Belle Époque.
In Son Altesse La Femme, Uzanne examines changing ideas of femininity through historical, cultural, and social perspectives, moving from traditional archetypes to the modern Parisienne. The work reflects the period’s fascination with fashion, psychology, and the evolving role of women in modern society.
A MASTERWORK BY SALVATORE DAVID: The binding elevates this copy beyond the ordinary limited edition. Executed by Salvatore David, son of the celebrated French binder Bernard David, it demonstrates the craftsmanship and decorative vocabulary that defined the finest French bindings of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The full red morocco binding features elaborate gilt tooling, inlaid blue and white leather decoration, gilt morocco doublures, and deep blue silk pastedowns and flyleaves. The original printed wrappers are preserved as a bound-in double-page spread.
A COLLECTOR’S ENHANCED STATE: The copy contains an additional suite of ten vignette illustrations printed separately without text. This additional suite distinguishes the volume from standard issues and reflects the nineteenth-century bibliophile’s desire to create individualized, enhanced copies through the selection and arrangement of visual material.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Quarto, approximately 7 by 10.75 inches. Full contemporary red morocco binding by Salvatore David. Elaborately tooled gilt decoration with inlaid blue and white leather elements. Gilt morocco doublures with deep blue silk pastedowns and flyleaves. Original printed wrappers bound in as a double-page spread.
Illustrated by Albert Lynch with engraved title vignette, fifty text engravings, eleven ornamental borders and head-pieces, ten tipped-in color plates, and an additional suite of ten vignette illustrations printed separately without text.
PROVENANCE: With the gilt-tooled red morocco book ticket of Cortlandt Field Bishop (1870–1935), important American collector, aviator, and founder of the American Art Association-Anderson Galleries.
CONDITION: Fine. The binding remains tight and square. The text block is clean with light, even age-toning. The red morocco remains vibrant with moderate shelf handling. A small opening is beginning at the front lower joint. The internal silk, gilt tooling, and decorative elements remain exceptionally bright. A remarkably well-preserved example of a high-status French binding.
CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE: THE BELLE ÉPOQUE BEAUTIFUL BOOK—THE ART OF BIBLIOPHILIA
Son Altesse La Femme represents the Belle Époque ideal of the book as a complete artistic object, where typography, illustration, binding, and subject matter worked together to create an experience beyond ordinary reading.
Uzanne’s writings occupy an important place in the history of French bibliophilia, reflecting the nineteenth-century movement toward the beautifully produced book that would influence later fine press and livre d’artiste traditions.
THE MAKING OF A COLLECTOR’S COPY.
This copy demonstrates how elite collectors transformed already distinguished editions through exceptional bindings and additional illustrative material. The Salvatore David binding and added suite of illustrations reveal the nineteenth-century tradition of treating books as individual works of art.
The Cortlandt Field Bishop book ticket further connects the volume to the formative years of major American rare book collecting, when private collectors and auction houses helped establish the modern market for important illustrated and finely bound books.

San Francisco: Grabhorn Press, 1961. Folio. [4], 46, [2 (blank)] pp., illus. Limited edition, one of 180 copies. This copy bound by Katy Starr-Baum in full black calf with inlays of sanded aluminum and pained paper as well as onlays of buffalo, watersnake and stone veneer, all arranged in a coronal design from front board to rear; graphite top edge with sprinkled palladium; handsewn silk endbands; hand-painted endpapers echo the cover design. Housed in clamshell box. A beautiful and fitting binding on one of the Grabhorn Shakespeare series with colored woodblock illustrations by Mary Grabhorn. A bold design using material that speaks to the time—stone and metal. The hand-painted endpapers evoke the night sky and have an iridescence that is dynamic when one opens the cover, the light catching the paint shifts as the board moves. While boldly monochromatic, what color there is in the binding, the leather onlays and the painted paper, picks up the pastels of Grabhorn’s illustrations. The coronal design speaks to the backdrop of this play, Henry IV holding onto power amidst treachery and Prince Hal’s coming into the crown. But as Starr-Baum notes, the design has a more potent, deeper meaning: “the circular shape … represents familial cycles: the traits and behaviors that are passed down from one generation to the next and the transformation of Prince Hal into King Henry.” A powerful binding by one of the most recent recipients of the Fine Binding Diploma of the elite American Academy of Bookbinding. $4000 less

Glaister, Donald Brooklyn Bridge A Love Song
$7,500.00Michael Pyron, Bookseller ABAA/ILAB
Cleveland: Foolsgold Studio, 2002. Folio. 28 pp. Limited edition, this is #40 of 60 copies (10 being held hors commerce). Signed by Glaister at the colophon. Backed in gray Nigerian goatskin with sanded aluminum sides, as issued, in felt-lined aluminum box with aluminum label. Prospectus, with minor soiling, laid in. A fine copy of this visually stunning artist book. Glaister describes the production in the prospectus: 14 leaves of 10 mil aluminum, attached to paper hinges. The book opens with an 18-line poem by Glaister in Avant Garde and is silkscreen printed on sanded aluminum. This is followed by five page-spread paintings of the bridge, seen from different angles, times of day, and times of year. Alternating between the paintings are sets of abstract studies, nine in all, that explore the essence of bridgeness. They are likewise made of sanded aluminum with acrylic paint, wire, aluminum tape, laminated polyester film and sand. The studies are mounted onto the aluminum pages. A visually striking celebration of the Brooklyn Bridge. The artist describes this best in the prospectus: “The story of the Bridge is one of opposites. The story of huge mass and lacy delicacy, of ancient and modern, of vitality and disease and death, of honor and corruption, of social vision and common greed. It is the story of links. The linking of East to West, of the agrarian past to the industrial future, of stone to steel, and of course of Brooklyn to Manhattan. Brooklyn Bridge: A Love Song visually and emotionally tells this story. The book is truly a love song. It sings of the elegance, power and invention of this great American icon.” This is the first artist book by Glaister who is one of the foremost design bookbinders practicing today. Glaister carved a path blending classical European bookbinding technique while exploring unexpected and untraditional materials and expression. His bindings appear in private collections throughout North American and Europe and in many of the most important institutions. less

Monique Lallier Plaisirs
$650.00Michael Pyron, Bookseller ABAA/ILAB
Monique Lallier, 2003. Octavo. [10] pp., illus. One-off artist book. In pastepaper over boards, backed in painted cloth; mother of pearl onlay on the front board with title in ink. Only light rubbing to the extremities of the boards, but generally, the condition is very nice. This is an engaging artist’s book comprising 6 page-spreads. The first spread functions as a title page with manuscript title in gold; the final spread, as a colophon of sorts. Each of the four internal page-spreads are thematically different and titled by hand: “Plaisir d’aimier,” “Enjoy Life,” “Enjoyable Nature,” and “Plaisir Epicurien.” Collaged spreads include painting, markings in ink and gold that are reminiscent of lettering, various onlays including pewter, a leaf, mother of pearl, photographs, etc. While there is a casualness to this book as though it is a study for another work or a vehicle for exploring techniques or visual ideas, it is remarkably cohesive in its presentation. An uncommon work to find in commerce from one of the most important design binders and binding instructors in the last five decades. A rare find. $650 less

Scanga, Carrie
Scanga, Carrie The Assembly
$2,650.00Michael Pyron, Bookseller ABAA/ILAB
[Portland, ME]: Carrie Scanga, 2025. Oblong quarto, 9-3/4″ x 13.” [14] pp., illus. From an extremely limited edition, this is number 3 of 4 copies. There are an additional 2 artist’s proofs. Accordion-bound with cloth over boards, a decorative motif stamped on both covers. Decorative endpapers and 14 page-spreads are intaglio-printed copperplate etchings with coloring via chine colle. Fine in original clamshell with decorative motif stamped across the covers. A timely and relevant work, Scanga writes that this book was inspired by the struggle with agency amidst oppression and censorship. In it, Scanga captures a tension between the public arena where every word and deed is fraught and the rich life in the safety of the private arena. The dark intaglio printed pages of the accordion book read as a haunting scene of a school assembly devoid of people. Turning the pages, the viewer engages in a hunt for the action, but it seems always just out of view. Then, from backstage, a fantastical broom sweeps joyously through multiple spreads, flitting up debris, and offering a source for a visual motif that persists throughout the pages. The viewers find some relief, even substantive action, in this irreverent play in the dark behind the stage. The final page shows apartment windows with curtains drawn, assuring the reader that no one saw as they let themselves be swept away. Scanga’s book is a thoughtful commentary on the stifling effects of the toxicity within the public arena, the cost of which is to drive substantive thought, dialog, and action backstage where it is hidden and cannot serve the larger community. $2650 less
