  • 219 half-tone photos of the war in the Philippines

    5031061

Photos of “War” in Philippines 1890-1901

    $250.00

Gene W. Baade Books on the West

Manila: No publisher stated, 1898. Wrappers. Very Good. Offered here are 219 photos reprinted in early half-tones of photographs from the Spanish-American War in the Philippines. Uniform dimensions including borders 5 1/2″ x 7 1/2″. Whether these early reprints were individually produced or in a larger production I do not know, except to say that the uniform size suggests the former. Subjects widely varied but almost all related to Admiral Dewey’s fleet, the war, and the aftermath inclusive of the subsequent war after the American took control. A sampling of subjects includes: U. S. military units at “rest” and in battle lines, Spanish soldiers and officers, insurgents, indigenous people, graves of dead soldiers, a handful of scaffolding and hangings pictures, landmark buildings, Dewey’s ships, President McKinley’s “funeral,” indigenous bow & arrow and spear hunters, scantily clad women from Hawaii, soldiers holding skulls, children and families smoking cigars, personal daily prep and hygiene, much more. In generally very good condition. Just a few photos with edge tears. Some captions have been trimmed off or mostly off. Collectively this group is quite a picture of the war, the soldiers, and the people.

Gandhiji: His Life and Work Published on His 75th Birthday, October 2, 1944

    $1,250.00

    32.1 Rare Books + Ephemera

Bombay: Keshav Bhikaji Dhawale, 1944. Hardcover. 4to., 405 pp. Original publisher’s light brown coarse khaki cloth with dark brown leather spine, gilt lettering, patterned endpapers, illustrated with black and white photographs and tipped-in color plates, frontispiece.   First unabridged edition of this tribute to Gandhi, with introductions by Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru and a biographical essay by Albert Einstein.   Published in 1944 to both commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s 75th birthday and support the Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Fund.   Contains essays by various contemporaries examining Gandh’s political career, social reform efforts, and influence on Indian society as well as a curated selection of Gandhi’s own writings, including speeches and letters. Although Gandhi generally declined to participate in birthday commemorations, he wrote a preface for this volume, citing its charitable purpose. As a mid-career publication released during Gandhi’s lifetime, the book reflects the contemporary reception of his work and offers early interpretations of his role in the Indian independence movement.   Published in India in 1944 to mark Mahatma Gandhi’s seventy-fifth birthday, Gandhiji: His Life and Work stands as one of the earliest comprehensive tributes to the spiritual and political leader of India’s independence movement. Issued before independence and while Gandhi was still alive, this commemorative volume documents his philosophy of non-violence, his leadership during the freedom struggle, and the global recognition of his influence.   Copies of this edition are scarce, particularly in well-preserved condition, as many were printed under wartime paper constraints. A significant historical document from the final years of British India—offering both biographical insight and period authenticity.   Very Good, intact with some age toning, soiling, handling and wear. Institutional ownership stamp on title page. Item #726202511

    Taizō Kuroda

    White Porcelain [Signed First Edition]

    $900.00

    32.1 Rare Books + Ephemera

Tokyo: Amus Arts Press, 2001. 4to, 176 pp. First Edition, First Printing. Softcover with French folds and with the rare wraparound band. Profusely illustrated. In English and Japanese A superb, minimalist monograph on the work of Japanese ceramic artist Taizō Kuroda [1946–2021], celebrated for his transcendent explorations of pure white porcelain. The book captures the serene geometry, meditative presence, and ethereal light that define Kuroda’s vessels and sculptural forms. Texts and photographic plates combine to create an object that itself reflects the artist’s devotion to clarity and quiet beauty. This first edition, signed by Kuroda on the title page in black ink, is a scarce and highly desirable copy—particularly sought after following the artist’s passing and the growing recognition of his influence on contemporary Japanese ceramics. Beautifully printed on heavy matte stock, the book features rich duotone photographs that convey both the precision and the spiritual stillness of his work. Kuroda, often called the ‘master of white,’ transformed the vocabulary of porcelain into a language of light and shadow, simplicity and contemplation. His work resides in major collections worldwide, including the Musée Guimet and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. This signed volume represents the definitive printed expression of his aesthetic philosophy—an ideal addition to collections of Japanese art, ceramics, or modern design.
