Elliot, W. J.; Holden, William Curry The Spurs [offered with] The Espuela Land and Cattle Company : a study of a foreign-owned ranch in Texas
$349.00Fine Editions Ltd
Spur, Texas / Austin: The Texas Spur [from 1938] / Texas State Historical Association, 1939. First Edition. Hardcover. Only printing of this western Americana, “now quite difficult to come by.” (Adams) Crown 8vo (176 x 125mm): [16],274pp, with portrait frontispiece from photograph on coated turquoise stock, three further plates, map, and vignettes in text. Publisher’s lime-green cloth, beige end papers, title page printed in green and black; issued without dust jacket. A virtually pristine, apparently unread copy. The second work, originally published in 1934, is offered in the revised and augmented edition of 1970, with five new chapters on the geography and history of the Spur country prior to founding of the ranch, as well as revisions and additions to the original work, which is devoted to aspects of life on the ranch from its founding in the early 1880’s. Demy 8vo (228 x 143mm): xv,[7],268pp, with 12 inserted plates from photographs and full-page map. Publisher’s sand linen printed in black, map end papers, double-page photo-illustrated title page; pictorial dust jacket, priced $9.00. An excellent example, tightly bound and clean throughout. Adams (Rampaging Herd) 757 (“A history of this famous ranch by one connected with it.”) and 1051. Howes E100 and H583. Reese (Six Score) 37. Fine. According to Reese, “While this book [The Spurs] is rather crudely printed and written, it gives more of the flavor of the Spur Ranch than any other book. The author worked for the Spur outfit, and there are many tales of his own personal experiences and those of his comrades.” (Reese addresses Holden’s near-contemporaneous account in his note to Elliot’s work.) Set on more than half a million acres east of the Southern High Plains, in Garza, Kent, Dickens, and Crosby counties, Texas, some ninety miles north of Colorado City, the Spur Ranch was established in 1883 by the Esquela [Spur] Land and Cattle Company of Forth Worth. In all, the company acquired sixty-one herds and their brands. Two years later the Spur was sold to an English syndicate (English and Scottish capitalists were then investing millions of pounds sterling in the acquisition of American cattle and range privileges), which operated the ranch until 1907, when it was sold again. Buffum, E. Gould (1820–1867); Caughey, John W., editor
Buffum, E. Gould (1820–1867); Caughey, John W., editor Six Months in the Gold Mines: From a Journal of Three Years’ Residence in Upper and Lower California 1847-48-49 [Fine Binding by Anson Herrick] A FOUNDATIONAL EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT OF THE CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH, IN FINE-BINDING BY ANSON HERRICK.
$325.00Blind Horse Books [ABAA]
A handsome modern edition of one of the important firsthand narratives of the California Gold Rush, here distinguished by a custom binding by Anson Herrick.AN EYEWITNESS TO THE CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH.E. Gould Buffum arrived in California as an officer with the New York Volunteers during the Mexican-American War and remained to become a miner and journalist. His account records California immediately before and during the transformation brought about by the discovery of gold.Buffum describes prospecting along the Bear and Yuba Rivers, Weber Creek, the American River and other early mining districts, together with camp life, mining methods, violence, prices, travel, and the extraordinary growth of San Francisco. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: BOUND BY ANSON HERRICK.+++ Finely bound by Anson Herrick in red crushed morocco with contrasting black morocco central onlayto the front board, lettered in gilt with the title and an abbreviated form of Buffum’s original subtitle. +++ Boards framed with multiple gilt rules and ornamental corner devices.+++ Rounded spine with raised bands, gilt rules and repeated gilt ornaments. Top edge gilt. Inner panels and gilt dentelles; marbled endpapers.+++ The black diamond-shaped title panel centered against the red morocco creates a strong visual treatment reminiscent of a nineteenth-century label or sign.+++ Title page printed with decorative display type. +++ Octavo, approximately 8 by 6 inches CONDITION: NEAR FINE. Faint sunning and occasional light wear to the binding. Spine shows mild toning and rubbing, with a small split or abrasion visible near the lower portion of the spine. Gilt remains bright and the decorative front board presents well. Interior appears clean and well preserved.HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: AN EARLY AUTHORITY ON GOLD RUSH CALIFORNIA.First published in Philadelphia by Lea and Blanchard in 1850, Buffum’s narrative belongs to the earliest substantial firsthand accounts of the California Gold Rush. FROM SOLDIER TO GOLD SEEKER:Buffum’s perspective is particularly valuable because he witnessed California on both sides of the great divide. He arrived during the Mexican-American War, served in the American military occupation, left the army at Monterey, entered the gold fields, and subsequently worked as a journalist in San Francisco. His narrative therefore encompasses both the discovery period and the rapid social and economic changes that followed. A FOUNDATIONAL CALIFORNIA NARRATIVE:Early bibliographer Robert Ernest Cowan described Buffum’s book as one of the principal sources of authority for the history of the period, reflecting its longstanding importance in the literature of early California. Modern historical studies likewise identify it among the first and most important published chronicles of the California Gold Rush. SUBJECTS: California Gold Rush, E. Gould Buffum, Anson Herrick, Ward Ritchie Press, John W. Caughey, California, Forty-Niners, Gold Mining, San Francisco, Sacramento River, Sierra Nevada, American River, Yuba River, Mexican-American War, Western Expansion, Bookbinding, Fine Bindings, Western Americana, Fine Bindings, California History, Gold Rush Narratives, First-Person Narratives, Travel and Exploration, Fine Press. Great Plains or Western Harvest Photo Exceptional
$250.00Gene W. Baade Books on the West
n.p: n.p., 1900. Original. Hardcover. Fine. FABULOUS but unidentified photo of frontier haying (we presume) camp. 7 3/16″ x 9 ¾” b/w photo mounted on black 9″ x 11 x ¾” mat. This is a remarkably descriptive and sharp photo of either a group of men and women gathered in front of what appears to be a traveling cook house, with some sitting on a wagon. In the doorway of the cookhouse are two women, well-dressed for the photo, wearing caps. Among the group of 25 boys, men, and one young girl is, third from the left, the gentleman who we presume is probably the owner / manager / boss / ramrod. Is he checking up on the progress of what is going on? The man third from right appears to be African-American. The girl in the photo, also wearing a woman’s work cap, sits on the shoulders of a couple of guys. The apparel in this photo includes overalls, trousers with suspenders, wide-brimmed hats, and jackets. They all appear to have clean faces, so maybe they are washed up for dinner? The romantic historian in me wants to know who they are, where they are, and what they have been doing. The landscape in the distance appears to show a field with a harvest cut line running across it. It is hard to say if the objects in the mid-distance on the right are hay shocks. A treasure if you can handle the mystery. Near fine condition. Photo to be uploaded or upon request. less

McWhorter and Tw-Wah-Y . Tw-Wah-Y: Also referred to as Christianized “Flora”, Tw-wah-y was a six-month-old Yakama child photographed in a traditional cradleboard. McWhorter included a famous photograph of her in his writings to document and humanize the Native American families impacted by federal policies, such as the Wapato irrigation canal issues. . L. V. McWhorter: An Ohio-born rancher who moved to Washington State in 1903 and integrated deeply with the Yakama Nation. He became an adopted member of the tribe, a fierce mediator with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and an essential historian who preserved Indigenous stories in works like Yellow Wolf: His Own Story. Except for a tiny cut on the top edge, the photo is in fine condition. Frankly, I don’t know when this print was made and if by McWhorter. What I can tell you is that it is superb. less
