The Battle of Bunker Hill actually was fought on Breed’s Hill, site of the Willard’s Bunker Hill Monument, on June 17, 1775. The first monument, commemorating the major opening battle of the American Revolution, was an 18-foot wooden pillar with gilt urn, erected in 1794 by King Solomon’s Lodge of Masons to honor the fallen patriot and mason, Major-General Dr. Joseph Warren, who was killed during the battle’s third and final assault. From 1824 to 1842, Willard designed and built the present monument, a 221-foot tall granite obelisk, for which he also developed the granite quarry, in Quincy, Massachusetts, that provided stone. The first railroad in the country was built to transport granite from that quarry to the waterfront, where it was taken by boat to Charlestown and hauled to the building site. N. B. Brooklyn Bridge A Love Song

    $7,500.00

    Michael Pyron, Bookseller ABAA/ILAB

Cleveland: Foolsgold Studio, 2002. Folio. 28 pp. Limited edition, this is #40 of 60 copies (10 being held hors commerce). Signed by Glaister at the colophon. Backed in gray Nigerian goatskin with sanded aluminum sides, as issued, in felt-lined aluminum box with aluminum label. Prospectus, with minor soiling, laid in. A fine copy of this visually stunning artist book. Glaister describes the production in the prospectus: 14 leaves of 10 mil aluminum, attached to paper hinges. The book opens with an 18-line poem by Glaister in Avant Garde and is silkscreen printed on sanded aluminum. This is followed by five page-spread paintings of the bridge, seen from different angles, times of day, and times of year. Alternating between the paintings are sets of abstract studies, nine in all, that explore the essence of bridgeness. They are likewise made of sanded aluminum with acrylic paint, wire, aluminum tape, laminated polyester film and sand. The studies are mounted onto the aluminum pages. A visually striking celebration of the Brooklyn Bridge. The artist describes this best in the prospectus: “The story of the Bridge is one of opposites. The story of huge mass and lacy delicacy, of ancient and modern, of vitality and disease and death, of honor and corruption, of social vision and common greed. It is the story of links. The linking of East to West, of the agrarian past to the industrial future, of stone to steel, and of course of Brooklyn to Manhattan. Brooklyn Bridge: A Love Song visually and emotionally tells this story. The book is truly a love song. It sings of the elegance, power and invention of this great American icon.” This is the first artist book by Glaister who is one of the foremost design bookbinders practicing today. Glaister carved a path blending classical European bookbinding technique while exploring unexpected and untraditional materials and expression. His bindings appear in private collections throughout North American and Europe and in many of the most important institutions.

Impressions of Old New Orleans: A Book of Pictures

    $300.00

    32.1 Rare Books + Ephemera

4to., 250 pp. unpaginated. 100 full page black and white photographic plates printed on rectos only, including many candid portraits of local African Americans, as well as architectural studies, street and garden views. Very Good with small stain on lower right and corner lacking the dust jacket. Item #913202413   This evocative early 20th-century volume showcases the atmospheric photography of Arnold Genthe, whose lens captured the vanishing charm of old New Orleans before modernization transformed its streets. With a warm and insightful foreword by Southern author Grace King, the book offers a rare visual record of the city’s French Quarter, Creole architecture, and street life at a pivotal moment in its history. Genthe’s soft-focus images and masterful compositions evoke the romance and mystery of a bygone era, while King’s prose situates them within the city’s cultural and historical fabric. Published in the 1920s, Impressions of Old New Orleans is among the most beautiful photographic tributes to the Crescent City. Collectors prize this title for its blend of documentary precision and artistic vision, as well as its association with two of the period’s most refined interpreters of place and character. A cornerstone work for enthusiasts of photography, New Orleans history, and Southern Americana.   Genthe [January 8, 1869 August 9, 1942] was a German-born American photographer, best known for his photos of San Francisco’s Chinatown, the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and his portraits of noted people, from politicians and socialites to literary figures and entertainment celebrities. Uncommon title.

Square 4to. 75 black and white plates printed on rectos only. Very Good with a slight spine lean and small red remainder dot on top edge in a Very Good dust jacket. Item #701202503  A classic collection of photographs that documented the demise of the buildings in and around the lower Manhattan.   In 1966, after several years spent rambling around the country photographing a Chicago-based motorcycle club, Danny Lyon returned to his native New York City and moved into a downtown apartment on Beekman Street that was under re-construction. Lyon learned that the block was among the sixty acres below Canal Street slated for clearing, areas that had once been a hub of thriving printing and produce industries but had bled out economically after the Second World War. Lyon returned to New York in 1969 after his work in Texas and the South with the SNCC, and lived for a while with Robert Frank [‘The Americans’]. During his stay Lyon was commissioned by the New York State Council of Arts to cover the demolition of a number of landmark buildings. including old Penn Station. Edith Wharton with Pictures by Maxfield Parrish

    Italian Villas and Their Gardens

    $700.00

    32.1 Rare Books + Ephemera

New York: Century, 1904. Hardcover. 4to. 270 pp. With 52 illustrations, 26 of them by Maxfelld Parrish, most of them in color. Green cloth stamped in gold with elaborate coat of arms with two [2] lions and escutcheon and painted garden scene on front boards. Top edge gilt. Fully illustrated with color plates of Parrish and black and white photos. Very Good with a tiny bit of edge wear at the extremities. Text block solid, illustrations clean. A nice copy.  Item #700142   A seminal work on garden design and a statement to the passionate connoisseurship of one of Americas greatest writers. This comprehensive look at the history and character of Italian garden architecture and ornamentation explores more than seventy-five villas, capturing what Wharton calls their “garden-magic” and illuminating the intimate relationship between the house, its formal gardens, and the surrounding countryside.    This elegant collaboration between one of America’s foremost literary stylists and one of its most celebrated illustrators captures the grace, symmetry, and romance of Italy’s classical gardens. Wharton’s text, informed by her keen architectural sensibility and lifelong love of European design, provides a thoughtful and erudite tour through the villas of Tuscany, Lombardy, and the Roman countryside. Parrish’s luminous color plates and delicate drawings complement her prose with scenes of tranquil terraces, sculpted hedges, and sunlit fountains. Published by Charles Scribner’s Sons, this first edition exemplifies early 20th-century bookmaking at its finest, with gilt-decorated green cloth covers and high-quality paper stock.    A landmark in travel and design literature, ‘Villas’ helped shape the American appreciation of classical landscape architecture. Copies in well-preserved condition are increasingly scarce, especially those retaining Parrish’s vibrant plates. A cornerstone volume for collectors of Wharton, Parrish, or fine illustrated books of the period.

Stock toned, with a little marking, but in general good order. Folded maps to rear show some offsetting from colour wash. Second map has short tear along one fold, but this minor.
