Edith Wharton with Pictures by Maxfield Parrish
Edith Wharton with Pictures by Maxfield Parrish Italian Villas and Their Gardens
$700.00New York: Century, 1904. Hardcover. 4to. 270 pp. With 52 illustrations, 26 of them by Maxfelld Parrish, most of them in color. Green cloth stamped in gold with elaborate coat of arms with two [2] lions and escutcheon and painted garden scene on front boards. Top edge gilt. Fully illustrated with color plates of Parrish and black and white photos. Very Good with a tiny bit of edge wear at the extremities. Text block solid, illustrations clean. A nice copy. Item #700142 A seminal work on garden design and a statement to the passionate connoisseurship of one of Americas greatest writers. This comprehensive look at the history and character of Italian garden architecture and ornamentation explores more than seventy-five villas, capturing what Wharton calls their “garden-magic” and illuminating the intimate relationship between the house, its formal gardens, and the surrounding countryside. This elegant collaboration between one of America’s foremost literary stylists and one of its most celebrated illustrators captures the grace, symmetry, and romance of Italy’s classical gardens. Wharton’s text, informed by her keen architectural sensibility and lifelong love of European design, provides a thoughtful and erudite tour through the villas of Tuscany, Lombardy, and the Roman countryside. Parrish’s luminous color plates and delicate drawings complement her prose with scenes of tranquil terraces, sculpted hedges, and sunlit fountains. Published by Charles Scribner’s Sons, this first edition exemplifies early 20th-century bookmaking at its finest, with gilt-decorated green cloth covers and high-quality paper stock. A landmark in travel and design literature, ‘Villas’ helped shape the American appreciation of classical landscape architecture. Copies in well-preserved condition are increasingly scarce, especially those retaining Parrish’s vibrant plates. A cornerstone volume for collectors of Wharton, Parrish, or fine illustrated books of the period. less

Benedict XIII, Pope
Benedict XIII, Pope [Broadside] Devotas Oraciones, que Rezaba . . .
$200.00Michael Pyron, Bookseller ABAA/ILAB
[Mexico]: c. 1800. Broadside. Item #10303 Broadside. 8-3/8″ x 6-1/8.” Prayer on recto only, inside of an ornamental border; verso blank. Remarkable copy with only trivial edgewear and toning to the deckle. This was printed 2 per sheet and trimmed, a portion of the original watermark (a bull) is visible on the cut edge. While there is no imprint, the cataloguer at the John Carter Brown Library identifies this a 19th century Mexican imprint. We have followed suit with confidence, and after a physical inspection of the laid paper, believe this is fairly early-19th century, possibly late 18th. A prayer by Pope Benedict XIII, asking before death one have a chance for repentance, hence “Para alcanzar de Dios la gracia de no morir de muerte repentina.” A wonderful talisman noting before the prayer that those who are unable to read should keep it with them every day and say a Hail Mary: “Los que no supieren leer, las traerán consigo, y rezarán todos los dias una Ave Marie.” There is at least one Spanish variant of this, with imprint and dated in 1758, according to OCLC. None of these ephemeral broadsides are common in institutions or in commerce. Not recorded in the standard bibliographies. less

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi [Mahatma]; Edited by D.G. Tendulkar; M. Chalapathi Rau; et al. A Word for the Readers by Mohandas Gandhi; Introduction by Jawaharlal Nehru Gandhiji: His Life and Work Published on His 75th Birthday, October 2, 1944
$1,250.00Bombay: Keshav Bhikaji Dhawale, 1944. Hardcover. 4to., 405 pp. Original publisher’s light brown coarse khaki cloth with dark brown leather spine, gilt lettering, patterned endpapers, illustrated with black and white photographs and tipped-in color plates, frontispiece. First unabridged edition of this tribute to Gandhi, with introductions by Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru and a biographical essay by Albert Einstein. Published in 1944 to both commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s 75th birthday and support the Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Fund. Contains essays by various contemporaries examining Gandh’s political career, social reform efforts, and influence on Indian society as well as a curated selection of Gandhi’s own writings, including speeches and letters. Although Gandhi generally declined to participate in birthday commemorations, he wrote a preface for this volume, citing its charitable purpose. As a mid-career publication released during Gandhi’s lifetime, the book reflects the contemporary reception of his work and offers early interpretations of his role in the Indian independence movement. Published in India in 1944 to mark Mahatma Gandhi’s seventy-fifth birthday, Gandhiji: His Life and Work stands as one of the earliest comprehensive tributes to the spiritual and political leader of India’s independence movement. Issued before independence and while Gandhi was still alive, this commemorative volume documents his philosophy of non-violence, his leadership during the freedom struggle, and the global recognition of his influence. Copies of this edition are scarce, particularly in well-preserved condition, as many were printed under wartime paper constraints. A significant historical document from the final years of British India—offering both biographical insight and period authenticity. Very Good, intact with some age toning, soiling, handling and wear. Institutional ownership stamp on title page. Item #726202511 less
