Wisconsin) Rhinelander, Wisconsin Victorian Photo Album
$100.00
n. a. No publisher, 1900. Soft cover. Very Good.
VICTORIAN PHOTO ALBUM RHINELANDER, WISCONSIN. Circa 1900. Rhinelander is situated in the Northwoods of Wisconsin 55 miles north of Wausau & 90 miles south of Lake Superior. It was a booming logging community in the 1880s and for many years. 8 1/2″ x 10 3/4″ red clothbound cabinet photo album with decorated metal corner pieces, a metal clasp & a mirror in the middle. Binding is in vg+ condition. The velvet pile is mostly worn away on the front cover & moderately so on the back cover. There is moderate soiling. Inside are 33 cabinet portraits. 25 are from Rhinelander photographers (exactly imprinted as: Wolcott, C. Krueger, B.F. Kaler (“successor to Krueger”), Carl Krueger, Krueger & Co., V.E. Wolcott, and Banister & Tibbitts). Other portraits: Knudsen of Waupaca, Towne of Shelby, Michigan, Winkle of Wautoma, James of Waupaca, & Warmbold of Chicago. Only two photos have names supposedly of the subjects on the back: “Emma & Mennia B.” (the Selby, Mich. photo) & “ada” on a C. Krueger photo. While most of the photos are adults presented conventionally for the time, a handful have added photo interest compositionally, or with children as the subject (8 children portraits, plus a couple of family portraits). All the photos have been very carefully removed for examination & reinserted back into their album pockets. Most are in vg or better condition. Some have some light rubbing or flecking. One has a couple of thumbnail size orange stains. Most of the photo page mounts are in generally very good condition with several having a torn or chipped entry slot, and two with the bottom strip missing. There are three pages without a photo (one double sided leaf vacant on both sides, & one leaf with one side vacant). A nice set of period photos from a popular Northern Wisconsin and Northwoods city.

Samuel Sewall; Samuel Willard
Samuel Sewall; Samuel Willard Phaenomena Quaedam Apocalyptica ad Aspectum Novi Orbis Configura; (with) The Fountain Opened Or, some few Lines towards a description of the New Heaven As It makes to those who stand upon the New Earth
$1,250.00Boston: Printed by Bartholomew Green, 1727. Second Edition (with additional material). Binding: Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good Condition, with two leaves printed in facsimile. Size: 8″-9″ – Octavo (8vo). 88 pages (64 p., 24 p.). In bringing together his earlier work, Willard’s sermon and an update in his appendix, Sewall marshals the evidence for his position that the Millennium is near and that the discovery and Christianizing of America is a crucial and perhaps final development to that end. Drawing from prophetic passages describing the coming Millennium, Sewall find significance in the discovery of the Americas as the final remaining area to be found. He also sees the New World as a logical place for the New Jerusalem to be established. Drawing upon others, including Manasseh Ben Israel, who speculated that the native Americans were the remnants of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel, Sewall writes, “God’s removing Israel out of his sight, is no less than three times mentioned; which may insinuate the Remoteness of that Land, into which God by his Providence intended to cast them. And none was no remote, and so much out of sight, as America” (p. 41). The summary description for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Digital Commons provides this assessment: “Often misunderstood, Phænomena illustrates the intricate connection between prophetic exegesis and New England politics, between eschatological speculations and self-representation and policies toward the Indian populations of North America.” Rebound in leather over boards, the leather paneled with a line embossed around the borders of the front and rear cover. Spine scored to give the effect of four compartments. Laid paper has been used for the replacement end papers. Text block is tight. The first two leaves (title page for Sewell and address to Sir William Ashhurst) are printed in facsimile on laid paper and trimmed slightly smaller on the outside edge as the original pages. The original text begins at Sig. B (p. [iii]). There are three holes in the outside margin of that leaf, affecting two of the marginal notes on the recto and another hole on p. 43 in the middle of the page. There is a tide mark on pp. [iii] to 52 and 57-62. Any prefatory pages for Willard’s work have not been reprinted here; the pages go directly from the last page of Sewell to the first of Willard’s. Although the two works are paginated separately, the signatures are continuous (Sewall ends with Sig. S and Willard begins with Sig. T). Willard’s pamphlet is followed by an appendix written by Sewall. The last two leaves of the appendix to Willard’s pamphlet have been strengthened at the edges with paper tape. Both of the pages are missing their upper corner. The page edges are slightly browned. less

Bird, Annie Laurie
Bird, Annie Laurie CORRESPONDENCE/LETTERS Idaho History
$395.00Gene W. Baade Books on the West
Nampa: Private Correspondence, 1946. Soft cover. Very Good. Item #2206008 Historian Bird of Nampa, Idaho, over a period of many years corresponded with rare book dealer Jerome Peltier of Clarks Old Book Store in Spokane. In this clutch of letters and cards, 23 in all, depending on what you count, but a minimum, Bird tries to answer questions from Peltier. While much of the content is personal (she talks about school teaching – was a high school teacher of history-her cats, a few trips, and even teaching Sunday School) the content discussed some figures of Pacific Northwest History Bird was researching, particularly William Wallace, who was governor of both Idaho and Washington Territories. Bird is trying to add to the data she is compiling, but often comes up on dead ends. A published articles is included, in duplicate, sent at two different times. There are no letters from Peltier, only Bird to Peltier. Most are from 1946-48, but a handful also as late as the 1960s. The letters are original as typed and signed by Bird, and have their accompanying mailing envelopes. Peltier corresponded with countless historians and saved everything they sent him, it seemed. Now there was a rare book dealer who just soaked up history, particular that of the Pacific Northwest. Here is what the Idaho State Archives says of Bird: Annie Laurie Bird was born August 21, 1893 in Billings, Montana. Bird moved with her parents to Idaho in 1905, where they homesteaded in Owyhee County. The family moved to Caldwell in 1906 and to Nampa in 1918. Annie Bird attended the College of Idaho and Columbia University and was awarded a Doctor of Letters Degree from Northwest Nazarene College in 1970. A teacher in Nampa for 35 years, Bird became a regionally-noted historian, writer, and researcher. She was the author of many books and articles. State newspapers also published her poetry. Annie Laurie Bird died on December 26, 1972 in Nampa, Idaho. Books by Annie Laurie Bird: Boise, The Peace Valley. Scott, Dred
Scott, Dred Report of the Decision of the Supreme Court of the United States And the Opinions of the Judges Thereof in the Case of Dred Scott Versus John F. A. Sandford. December Term, 1856
$495.00Gene W. Baade Books on the West
Washington DC: Benjamin C. Howard, 1857. First Thus. Soft cover. Poor. Item #2507047 1857 Washington printing said to be issued at or about the same time as the New York edition. Original string-tied printed wraps. LACKING ORIGINAL PAPER COVERS, TITLE PAGE, AND LAST LEAF (page 239) the last two of which have been replaced by your bookseller as new pages. In this famous and convoluted case Scott, a slave who had also lived in free Wisconsin Territory and Illinois, sued for his freedom (as did his wife). A lower court in Missouri ruled in his favor. This ruling was reversed by the Missouri Supreme Court, whereupon Scott appealed to the US Supreme Court where he lost in a 7-2 decision when the winds of slavery politics blew to smithereens the up-to-then accepted “doctrine” that, “once free” (as in having lived in a free state or territory), “always free.” This decision has come down through US history as one of the biggest failures of the US Supreme Court. As noted above, the title page is missing. I have supplied. cutting to proper dimension, a modern page of the same, which is laid in. This copy is also missing the last page (p.339), but I have supplied the entire text of the last page and also cut it to proper dimension and laid it in. Otherwise the copy, string-tied as noted, has water tidelines upper half of the first leaf, which tideline extends to a decreasing degree into the 63pps. Clarity of readability is not compromised. Quite minor foxing to a few margins. Minor edge chipping to first and last pages. To be obviously handled with care, but a quite serviceable reading copy if you desire this text in its original form pps (3) – 228. Very scarce. This document in book form is #68 in the famed Grolier Club’s One Hundred Influential American Books Printed before 1900 published in 1947. less

Gideon, D. C.
Gideon, D. C. INDIAN TERRITORY Descriptive Biographical and Genealogical including the Landed Estates, County Seats Etc., Etc. with a General History of the Territory in One Volume
$1,996.00Gene W. Baade Books on the West
NYC and Chicago: Lewis, 1901. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Item #2206028 1st printing. Beautifully rebound in three-quarter leather and cloth with gilt titles (slightly flaked) on spine and with new endpapers. 956pp. 100 photogravure portraits plus several other photos. A. E. G. (all edges gilt). Originally owned by and with the signature (three times) of “H. S. Suggs, Berwyn I. T.” The second Suggs signature was on a chipped sheet & in rebinding the binder affixed it to a sheet of matching tone and bound it in. The third signature of Mr. Suggs is written along the inner margin of where he is in the book (pps. 580-581). Suggs “… came to Berwyn in the Indian Territory, where he continued in the lumber business [from Texas] and also ran a cotton gin until 1901, when he sold his gin and is now engaged in the hardware and lumber business . . . he is interested [also] in the cattle business, and firm being known as Suggs and Brother.” The brother, Sidney Suggs, has an even longer entry in the volume and a portrait. A glossy photo of him and his family is laid in. It is printed from the archives of the Okla Hist Soc. One leaf (pps 931-932) was once detached but has been tipped back in. It has tears radiating out from the gutter and has 3 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ inch loss of text in the middle of the page. Title page has two edge chips. One index sheet has old cloth tape edge repairs. Throughout there are some edge tears that have not been repaired, but we have discovered none of a serious nature. Many tissue guards are missing. There is some browning/foxing on some pages, but not extensively. Some page corners are rounded from use. We have conservatively graded this copy “good,” but in our view with experience in these kinds of volumes, if it were in our personal collection we would have no issue grading it very good. Adams (Six-guns 1107) says, “Has a long section on all the outlaws of the Indian Territory, including the Dalton gang and the Cook gang …” [but Adams adds the author is mistaken about Belle Starr’s brother & repeats false information about her]. In this section there is glowing information on the famous Black Man, Deputy. U. S. Marshal Bass Reeves, and an account of one of his captures of outlaws involving gunplay. An Oklahoma rarity.
