Leslie, Mrs. Frank
Leslie, Mrs. Frank Frank Leslie’s Scenes and Portraits of the Civil War Frank Leslie’s Illustrated History of the Civil War
$504.00
New York: Mrs. Frank Leslie, 1894. First Edition. Hardcover. Good.
Folio, 11 3/4″ x 16 1/2″. True first cloth bound edition. 480pp. Profusely illustrated with wood engravings and other types of print images, some double spread, some single page, and some multiple images on a page. The title page continues: “Most Important Events of the Conflict Between the States graphically pictured. Stirring Battle Scenes and Grand Naval Engagements, drawn by special artists on the spot. Portraits of Principal Participants, Military and Civil; Famous Forts; Pathetic Episodes, Etc., Etc. the whole forming An Authentic Pictorial History of the War, by such well-known artists as (extended list) with an introduction by Joseph B. Carr, Major-General. Condition: Re-backed with almost the entire original cloth retained over a new spine — small loss to original cloth at spine ends. Otherwise original covers and endpapers with new binding that has tightened the text block and made this copy ready for another one hundred years of reference and enjoyment to the collector and researcher. Some pages have a few very short edge tears. There are four sequential leaves that inexplicably have chipped edges but the chips do not affect the images or text on those pages. There is a very handsomely written ownership signature & date in broad pencil on a blank preliminary page, “April 1, 1895 William K. Hayes Bridgeport, Conn.” Gilt on the cover is very good. There is some general wear & the right edge area of the front cover is darker than the rest of the cover. The rear cover has considerable old moisture stain/bleaching, and thus is compromised visually, but is clean and stable. Very scarce now in the first edition.

Warren, George Henry
Warren, George Henry THE PIONEER WOODSMAN AS HE IS RELATED TO LUMBERING IN THE NORTHWEST
$250.00Gene W. Baade Books on the West
Minneapolis: Gov’t Printing Office & Smithsonian, 1914. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Item #2105092 1st printing. 1/2 leather & cloth boards. 184pp. Illustrated with nice photogravures. Family copy with unusual custom bookplate on the front paste down of the author’s son & daughter-in-law, Frank and Alice Warren, which has three half-tone photos on it showing a cabin, a lighthouse, & a forest road. On the frontispiece (showing a stream & some trees) there is a space for an inscription, this one being the author’s presentation to Alice, his daughter-in-law, & dated Aug. 10, 1914. This book is a superb memoir of early timber cruising in northern Wisconsin & Minnesota beginning in the 1870s. A remarkable life as a woodsman who eventually became what I believe to have been a leader in the industry in that Great Lakes area. The leather joints have been repaired and are holding well, but note some deterioration at head & toe of spine. A good, tight copy. This book was printed on beautifully textured paper from Italy. less

Washington DC: Benjamin C. Howard, 1857. First Thus. Soft cover. Poor. Item #2507047 1857 Washington printing said to be issued at or about the same time as the New York edition. Original string-tied printed wraps. LACKING ORIGINAL PAPER COVERS, TITLE PAGE, AND LAST LEAF (page 239) the last two of which have been replaced by your bookseller as new pages. In this famous and convoluted case Scott, a slave who had also lived in free Wisconsin Territory and Illinois, sued for his freedom (as did his wife). A lower court in Missouri ruled in his favor. This ruling was reversed by the Missouri Supreme Court, whereupon Scott appealed to the US Supreme Court where he lost in a 7-2 decision when the winds of slavery politics blew to smithereens the up-to-then accepted “doctrine” that, “once free” (as in having lived in a free state or territory), “always free.” This decision has come down through US history as one of the biggest failures of the US Supreme Court. As noted above, the title page is missing. I have supplied. cutting to proper dimension, a modern page of the same, which is laid in. This copy is also missing the last page (p.339), but I have supplied the entire text of the last page and also cut it to proper dimension and laid it in. Otherwise the copy, string-tied as noted, has water tidelines upper half of the first leaf, which tideline extends to a decreasing degree into the 63pps. Clarity of readability is not compromised. Quite minor foxing to a few margins. Minor edge chipping to first and last pages. To be obviously handled with care, but a quite serviceable reading copy if you desire this text in its original form pps (3) – 228. Very scarce. This document in book form is #68 in the famed Grolier Club’s One Hundred Influential American Books Printed before 1900 published in 1947. less

[Israel Mauduit], ed.
[Israel Mauduit], ed. The Letters of Governor Hutchinson, and Lieut. Governor Oliver, &c. … And Remarks Thereon with The Assembly’s Address …
$1,500.00London: Printed for J. Wilkie, at Number 71, in St. Paul’s Church-yard, 1774. Edition Unstated. Binding: Hardcover (Original Cloth). Book Condition: Very Good- Condition. Size: Octavo (8-9″). 134 pages. Sabin 34072. Howes H-851 (Howes 1994 837). The full title is “The letters of Governor Hutchinson, and Lieut. Governor Oliver, &c. printed at Boston and remarks thereon : with the Assembly’s Address and the Proceedings of the Lords Committee of Council : together with the substance of Mr. Wedderburn’s speech relating to those letters.” This English edition, believed to be edited by Hutchinson’s friend Israel Mauduit, was issued following the investigation into the 1773 publication of Hutchinson and Oliver’s letters in Boston. No edition is stated but the Library of Congress’ “Revolutionary America 1763-1789” describes it as the “second London edition” [#31610]. What appears to be an earlier printing held by the Library of Congress (E211 .M445 [Copy 1 RBSCD]) only goes to signature T and ends with p. 126, including double-numbered pages ([75]-80). This copy matches the collation of that copy but adds an additional signature (S) and ends with p. 134. The additional signature provides the report from the Committee of Council for Plantation Affairs read in the presence of King George, 7 February 1774. The letters were provided to Thomas Cushing, Speaker of the Massachusetts Assembly in December 1772, by Benjamin Franklin, Pennsylvania’s agent in London. His letter admitting his role appears on pp 72-73. Although he requested they not be printed, that request was ignored. The letters were written in 1767-1769, but were used (largely out of context) to fan the pre-Revolutionary flames. The way they were presented was expressed in a part of the lengthy title the Boston printers provided: “The Judicious Reader will Discover the Fatal Source of the Confusion and Bloodshed in which this Province especially has been involved, and Which Threatned [sic] Total Destruction to the Liberties of all America.” Sabin notes the publication of the letters “did more, perhaps, to bring revolutionary matters to a crisis than any previous publication.” In his note, Howes is less tentative: “Publication of these letters … fanned revolutionary sentiments in America more than any other book of the period.” A Very Good-minus hardcover copy that has been rebound in red silk over boards. The silk has been coated in some way. The reason for the “minus” is because it is lacking its spine. The corners are sharp though worn through to the boards. The text block is tight and bright, in near fine condition. The only marking is on the title page where two previous owners have marked the pages on which the various parts of the collection of documents begin. The page edges have been stained red, probably when the book was rebound. less
