Andriessen, Pieter Jacob
Andriessen, Pieter Jacob Wat er alzoo in de wereld te zien is een aardig boek voor kinderen, met bijschriften
$1,024.00
Amsterdam: G. Theod. Bom, n.d. [c. 1874]. Pictorial Wrappers. Crown 8vo (180 x 128mm): [8]pp, with six color lithographs (printed by Emrik & Binger, Haarlem), each with flaps that, when flipped, reveal a completely different image (a ship at sea becomes Bedouins in the desert, a volcano erupts into walruses in the Arctic, Native Americans transform into explorers in the Rockies), taking the viewer on a tour around the world. The accompanying text guides the reader through these twists and turns. Original burnt orange illustrated card wrappers printed in green, gold, and terracotta and lettered in black. A superbly preserved example of this fragile production, all but pristine, rare, with Worldcat Discovery listing only one copy and LHD none. Fine.
For more than 700 years book designers have been pushing back the boundaries of the two-dimensional page, adding flaps and rotating parts to enhance the text, most often in scientific literature. But only in the nineteenth century did movable flaps became a regular feature in children’s books. In the Netherlands, ‘De nieuwe rijschool’ [The new riding school], published in 1856, was the first movable children’s book, which reached their peak in the 1870s and 1880s. Gerardus Theodorus Bom (1814-1884) was a Dutch publisher of books in Amsterdam, issuing such titles as Kindervreugd (1864), Robinson Crusoë (c.1865), and Kunstenmakers at work (1875). Andriessen’s first books were published under the pseudonym Pieter Jacobsz. Under his own name he wrote a series of romantic stories for young people, mainly derived from Dutch national history. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable mylar sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. [Daniel Defoe]
[Daniel Defoe] A trumpet blown in the north, and sounded in the ears of John Eriskine, call’d by the men of the world, Duke of Mar By a ministring friend of the people call’d Quakers. With a Word of Advice and Direction to the said John Eriskine, and his Followers
$350.00[London]: S[amuel]. Keimer, 1716 [1715]. First Edition. Binding: Hardcover (Three Quarter Leather). Book Condition: Very Good+ Condition. Size: 8″-9″ – Octavo (8vo). 32 pages. Pp. 3-38, 1 l. 18 cm. (8vo.). The publication information at the bottom of the title page is: “Sold by S. Keimer, at the Cheshire Coffee-house in King’s Arms-Court on Ludgate-hill. MDCCXVI [for 1715]. Price 6 d.” Indexed in ESTC Defoe t070860, Moore 330, Furbank and Owens. A critical bibliography of Daniel Defoe, no. 180, Smith, Anti-Quakeriana, p.35. A beautifully preserved copy in an attractive binding of Defoe’s “pseudo-Quaker rebuke to the Earl of Mar, the leader of the Jacobite rebels, making much of his violation of the Oath of Abjuration, pointing out the folly of his hopes of English support, and prophesying his defeat” (University of London Library-Senate House catalog note). The pamphlet has been rebound in the late 19th century in three-quarter red leather and marbled paper over boards. Worn at the tips and head and foot of the spine. Additional pages of laid paper have been bound in to create a book thick enough for the title and date to be stamped in bright gilt on the spine. The high quality paper upon which the pamphlet was printed remains bright and in excellent condition. No foxing in this copy, although the first and last page (title page and verso of the catalog) are a bit soiled and there is a spot in the margin of one page, not affecting any text. One left (pp. 13-14) has a corner (1″ by 2.5″) torn off, not affecting any text. The one unnumbered leaf has two pages (recto and verso) of advertisements, including one for Keimer’s newspaper, the London Post. Moore reports six copies, of which I could confirm four still in the collections. World Cat lists four more, for a total of eight library holdings of the first edition. less
