Housman, Laurence (1865–1959)
Housman, Laurence (1865–1959) Princess Badoura: A Tale from the Arabian Nights [Golden Age Color Plates]
$650.00London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1913. Illustrated by Edward Dulac (1882-1953). First Printing, Trade. A luminous Edwardian retelling of an Arabian Nights tale, lavishly illustrated by Edmund Dulac at the height of his powers. The jewel-like color plates and richly decorated binding make Princess Badoura one of the most visually striking productions of the Golden Age of Illustration. This 1913 trade first presents Laurence Housman’s retelling of the story of Princess Badoura, drawn from The Thousand and One Nights, and illustrated with ten color plates by Edmund Dulac. Issued during Dulac’s most celebrated period, the book exemplifies his refined decorative style, combining Persian and East Asian motifs with a distinctive Edwardian elegance. The story follows the love between a Persian prince and a Chinese princess, both confined by their royal parents after refusing arranged marriages. Their fates are intertwined through the intervention of genies, leading to trials, transformation, and eventual reunion. Housman’s text emphasizes wit, resilience, and moral agency, echoing Scheherazade’s role as both storyteller and survivor within the larger Arabian Nights tradition. Bound in cream cloth decorated in gilt and turquoise; Teal endpapers with peacock embellishments, Quarto; approximately 10¼ × 7¾ inches. [ii], 113 pages. Illustrated with 10 color plates by Edmund Dulac, each mounted and protected by captioned tissue guards. All plates present. Moderate wear to the binding with minor age-soiling to cloth, dimming to the sunned spine, small neat tears to the head and tail of the spine, and mild warping to the rear board. A slight hint of spine exposure at the center of the text block. Binding remains firm and sound. Foxing heaviest at the endpapers, with occasional light spotting or smudging to interior pages; pages otherwise unmarked. Princess Badoura occupies a notable place within the Golden Age of Illustration, pairing Dulac’s ornamental color work with a narrative drawn from one of the most enduring story cycles in world literature. Dulac’s plates emphasize atmosphere and symbolism over literal realism, using stylized figures, flattened perspective, and rich decorative patterning that influenced book design and illustration well into the twentieth century. The volume remains especially valued by collectors for its visual coherence, period binding, and the completeness of its illustrative program. Subjects: Edmund Dulac’s color illustration, Arabian Nights adaptations, decorative cloth bindings, Edwardian book design, and early twentieth-century illustrated gift books, Illustrated literature of the Edwardian period, fantasy and folklore derived from The Arabian Nights, and Golden Age of Illustration book production. less

Shakespeare, William
Shakespeare, William The First Part of Henry the Fourth
$4,000.00Michael Pyron, Bookseller ABAA/ILAB
San Francisco: Grabhorn Press, 1961. Folio. [4], 46, [2 (blank)] pp., illus. Limited edition, one of 180 copies. This copy bound by Katy Starr-Baum in full black calf with inlays of sanded aluminum and pained paper as well as onlays of buffalo, watersnake and stone veneer, all arranged in a coronal design from front board to rear; graphite top edge with sprinkled palladium; handsewn silk endbands; hand-painted endpapers echo the cover design. Housed in clamshell box. A beautiful and fitting binding on one of the Grabhorn Shakespeare series with colored woodblock illustrations by Mary Grabhorn. A bold design using material that speaks to the time—stone and metal. The hand-painted endpapers evoke the night sky and have an iridescence that is dynamic when one opens the cover, the light catching the paint shifts as the board moves. While boldly monochromatic, what color there is in the binding, the leather onlays and the painted paper, picks up the pastels of Grabhorn’s illustrations. The coronal design speaks to the backdrop of this play, Henry IV holding onto power amidst treachery and Prince Hal’s coming into the crown. But as Starr-Baum notes, the design has a more potent, deeper meaning: “the circular shape … represents familial cycles: the traits and behaviors that are passed down from one generation to the next and the transformation of Prince Hal into King Henry.” A powerful binding by one of the most recent recipients of the Fine Binding Diploma of the elite American Academy of Bookbinding. $4000 less

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi [Mahatma]; Edited by D.G. Tendulkar; M. Chalapathi Rau; et al. A Word for the Readers by Mohandas Gandhi; Introduction by Jawaharlal Nehru Gandhiji: His Life and Work Published on His 75th Birthday, October 2, 1944
$1,250.00Bombay: Keshav Bhikaji Dhawale, 1944. Hardcover. 4to., 405 pp. Original publisher’s light brown coarse khaki cloth with dark brown leather spine, gilt lettering, patterned endpapers, illustrated with black and white photographs and tipped-in color plates, frontispiece.  First unabridged edition of this tribute to Gandhi, with introductions by Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru and a biographical essay by Albert Einstein.  Published in 1944 to both commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s 75th birthday and support the Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Fund.  Contains essays by various contemporaries examining Gandh’s political career, social reform efforts, and influence on Indian society as well as a curated selection of Gandhi’s own writings, including speeches and letters. Although Gandhi generally declined to participate in birthday commemorations, he wrote a preface for this volume, citing its charitable purpose. As a mid-career publication released during Gandhi’s lifetime, the book reflects the contemporary reception of his work and offers early interpretations of his role in the Indian independence movement.  Published in India in 1944 to mark Mahatma Gandhi’s seventy-fifth birthday, Gandhiji: His Life and Work stands as one of the earliest comprehensive tributes to the spiritual and political leader of India’s independence movement. Issued before independence and while Gandhi was still alive, this commemorative volume documents his philosophy of non-violence, his leadership during the freedom struggle, and the global recognition of his influence.  Copies of this edition are scarce, particularly in well-preserved condition, as many were printed under wartime paper constraints. A significant historical document from the final years of British India—offering both biographical insight and period authenticity.  Very Good, intact with some age toning, soiling, handling and wear. Institutional ownership stamp on title page. Item #726202511  less
