Ball, Charles.
Ball, Charles. SLAVERY IN THE UNITED STATES: A Narrative of the Life and Adventures of Charles Ball, a Black Man, Who lived forty years in Maryland, South Carolina and Georgia, as a Slave, under various masters, and was one year in the Navy, with Commodore Barney, during the late war.
$1,200.00Lewistown, PA: Printed and Published by John W. Shugert, 1836. First edition. The subtitle continues “Containing an account of the manners and usages of the Planters and Slaveholders of the South, a description of the condition and treatment of the Slaves, with observations upon the state of morals amongst the cotton planters, and the perils and sufferings of a fugitive slave, who twice escaped from the cotton country.” Rare first edition of this important slavery narrative by Ball, one which covers forty years of his life as a slave and his several escapes, an account reprinted many times through the 1850s under various titles. Born into slavery in Maryland around 1780, separated from his mother when he was four, he was owned by several different masters and lived in three states. Attempting escape on numerous occasions, he eventually succeeded and lived on a small farm until he was recaptured in 1830. However, he escaped again, and moved to Philadelphia, where he wrote this autobiography with the assistance of Isaac Fisher, a white lawyer. Fisher’s preface in which he acknowledges omitting or ‘carefully suppressing’ Ball’s opinions on slavery, cast some doubt upon the authenticity of this work, but the second edition, just one year later, included a statement from two prominent Pennsylvanians “that we know the black man whose narrative is given in this book, and have heard him relate the principal matters contained in the book concerning himself, long before the book was published.” Two page preface by Isaac Fisher. Errata list on verso of title page. 400 pp, Fair condition only in original boards, resewn and rebacked with dark brown goatskin, endpapers replaced. Significant rubbing and wear to the edges of the boards, tidemarks and foxing throughout. Â Loss of approximately half an inch to the bottom edge of the first leaf after the title (the preface). less

Foreword by H.K. Ramsey, Imperial Kligrapp
Foreword by H.K. Ramsey, Imperial Kligrapp Proceedings of the Second Imperial Klonvokation Held in Kansas City, Missouri Sept. 23, 24, 25 and 26, 1924
$800.00Atlanta: Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, 1924. Softcover. 8vo. Very scarce report of the second Klonvokation, which was held every two years. Very Good in lightly soiled wraps and with covers slightly pulled away from staples. Item #39236  It was reported that there were 2,000 men and 3,000 concomitants present at the Kansas City meeting recorded here, which was held at the Kansas City Convention Center in Kansas City, Missouri. This Klan meeting was held behind closed doors and a card and a password were necessary to gain admittance. Only Klansmen with courtesy cards were allowed to view the proceedings. What was published about the proceedings came through the Klan publicity office.  The meeting was opened by the Grand Dragon of Nebraska. The Imperial Wizard, Dr. Hiram Wesley Evans of Atlanta delivered a message to the Klonvocation on the state of the Empire:  ‘This Klonvocation, held here in the great Middle West, is assembled on the battlefield of the immediate future…some of the Eastern states are today lost to true Americanism and must be rewon; but the great American population of the Middle West, of the South and of the Southwest are left to do valiant battle…you are leaders in the only movement in the world, at present, which exists solely to establish a civilization that will insure these things…history has proved, and is proving daily that only Nordic and Anglo-Saxon peoples have reached a high level of intelligence.’  Rare record of an early 20th century KKK gathering. New York State Board of Health
New York State Board of Health LIST OF MAPS OF SEWER SYSTEMS AND SEWAGE DISPOSAL WORKS New York State towns, 10 towns
$2,500.00Gene W. Baade Books on the West
Albany? State of New York? 1895. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Item #SHEL2027 Unrecorded portfolio unless found in town and state archives. This is a portfolio 0f 32 maps (complete set) of approved sewage plans for ten towns and villages in New York. The maps of varying sizes up to approx 40″ x 40+” are folded to octavo size and gathered in a string-tied folder titled in gilt on the spine, STATE BOARD (device) HEALTH SEVENTEENTH ANNUAL REPORT. The approval dates printed on maps range from June 30, 1896 to December 31, 1896. Printed on the maps is approval information with printed signatures of officials signing off on them; also printed is/are firm(s) producing them who presumably are doing the work. I cannot be exact on the source information (construction firms) on each map because I have only opened 4-5 of the maps due to the tricky nature of opening particularly the huge maps and not tearing the folds as the paper is somewhat thin. The towns and villages represented are: Oneida, Nyack, City of Mount Vernon, (Vernon Park District), North Tarrytown, Tonawanda, New Hartford, Pelham Manor, Cooperstown, Geneva, Waverly, Clayton, Jamaica, Sandy Hill, Depew. We see that, at least in some cases, perhaps most, only certain sections of the town or village has plans, and several towns have more than one map. As to condition, here are but a few short tears in what did open, slight splitting at some folds and fold intersections. The cloth portfolio is vg+. For any collector, researcher, or city doing research on what appear to be original sewage systems in these ten towns, this is a gold mine of information. Some maps even have piping sizes. Streets and streams and canals, etc. are shown on most maps. An extraordinarily rare set of infrastructure maps. less

Slatzer, Robert F. (Director) Anthony Cardoza, Bill Reardon, & Herman Tomlin (Producers BIGFOOT, RARE 1970 MOVIE POSTER
$650.00Gene W. Baade Books on the West
RARE DRAMATIC BIGFOOT MOVIE POSTER, Ellman Film Enterprises. 1970. The over-the-top film, BIGFOOT, produced in 1970 by Anthony Cardoza and Bill Reardon, was panned by everyone, with virtually no one saying it was any good. One wag said that it would be the only opportunity to see John Carradine, Joi Lansing, Judy Jordan, John Mitchum, James Craig, and several other actors all together in one movie, so you better see it anyway! The only poster for this film that one finds for sale is the common one that you can buy on several websites for very little money. But that one is like cheap, 3-year old Scotch compared with 50-year old good stuff that you will find in Edinburgh whisky shops under lock and key and that I cannot afford. I frankly don’t know about this poster in terms of whether it was an advance or trial poster that didn’t make the cut, or wasn’t produced en masse for some other reason. It is far more classical in appearance than the cheap cartoonish one you can still get for a few bucks. Unrolled to a size of 27 ¼” x 39 ¾”, it takes up almost all of my golden oak antique kitchen table and half of my standard-size bed! It is professionally backed on linen. In spite of one long tear and several short tears, all of which are professionally and archivally repaired, this poster ends up being showy, good-looking, and impossible to ignore, a poster that would dominate the conversation of any beer and brats forest cookout-“Have you seen that poster?!” It will bust the balls of any hairy-chested man-cave dweller and, because it is also a “biker” film, salt the seats of Harley-Davidson rally-goers on their way to Sturgis! Bigfoot filmography author David Coleman in his massive book, 2012 book, The Bigfoot Filmography: Fictional and Documentary Appearances in Film and Television, devotes two quarto pages to description of the film. He includes these gems: “Bigfoot is perhaps the most entertainingly bad Bigfoot movie of the entire ‘cycle’ . . . given the strange blending of motorcycles, ridiculously bad Bigfoot costumes, has-been actors, bikini babes, and a mutant music score, the entire enterprise is truly a slow-paced, stupefying descent into all things torpid, but with a camp sensibility that redeems Bigfoot from total boredom. Then, from a historical perspective, he concludes: the film “marks the beginning of a new era in the genre that draws a clean dividing line between the earlier film incarnations of the ‘wild man’ cryptid appearing mostly in snow settings as a Yeti (and) set(s) the stage for the plethora of Big-foot focused movies to follow in the 1970s.” This is an essential poster for few people who have the wall-space to hang it. It would be one the poster you would frame and hang front and center over your giant fieldstone fireplace at one end of your room with the 20-foot vaulted ceiling. Unquestionably rare. less
