Parks, Gordon (1912-2006)
Parks, Gordon (1912-2006) A STAR FOR NOON: An Homage to Women in Images, Poetry, and Music.
$450.00
New York & Boston: Bulfinch Press Book/Little, Brown and Company, (2000)
First printing. A unique copy of this beautiful book, one published to co-incide with the HBO documentary on his life and work. In it,  Parks (at age 87) “turns his skills as a photographer, poet, and composer to the universally appealing theme of love.[It] combines exquisite female nudes with still lifes, poetry, and original music. The female nudes are both sensuous and reverential: the rich colors are complimented by the still lifes of flowers and mysterious abstracts. The eighteen previously unpublished poems trace the arc of love – from infatuation through loss and, finally, fulfillment.”
This copy is INSCRIBED by Parks on the half title page and dated in 2002. In addition, tipped onto this page are two small snapshots, one of Stephanie Parker (one of the models in this book), with Parks, and the other of Parks, Stephanie Parker, award-winning producer Lucia Kaiser and former NYC Mayor, David Dinkins, both with short hand-written notes on verso by Stephanie Parker.
A CD of ‘A Star for Noon Suite’ written by Gordon Parks, and with him on the piano, is affixed to the rear pastedown. Large square format. Blue cloth boards and spine with pictorial endpapers. 108 ppÂ
Fine in black cloth with gilt lettering on the spine in a fine dust jacket.Â

Michael X born Michael de Freitas, aka Michael Abdul Malik and Abdul Malik (1933-1975)
Michael X born Michael de Freitas, aka Michael Abdul Malik and Abdul Malik (1933-1975) HOLOGRAPHIC LETTER FROM A BLACK POWER ACTIVIST
$850.00London:  Undated(1969) Single sheet with a handwritten note by this Trinidian-born Black activist, written on one side only,  addressed to “Sister” and signed with his usual “Peace and Love.” Undated but the address at the top is 101 Holloway Road, the site of the “Black House,”  a commune of which he was the self-appointed leader and which was founded in 1969.  That was also the year that the Cleavers arrived in Algeria.  Michael X described the Black House  as a place where “that ‘get a gun’ rhetoric is over. We’re talking of really building things in the community needed by people in the community. We’re keeping a sane approach” although it was later the site of an attempted extortion, for which Michael and four of his colleagues were arrested  – and bailed out by John Lennon.  This note, which comments that the bearer works for an Australian underground magazine called Oz, co-founded and edited by Richard Neville, reveals how related the various movements of the late 60s were – from the Black Panthers in exile, to Richard Neville’s controversial publishing venture, to John and Yoko Lennon contributing to a fund-raiser for the Black House. Seen in the light of his last years when Michael X returned to Trinidad, where he was tried and convicted and sentenced to death for his involvement in the murders of two members of the commune he founded there (a story told by Nobel Laureate V.S. Naipaul in ‘Killings in Trinidad”),  closing with ‘Peace and Love’ seems ironic. Sheet measures approximately 12 1/2 in by 8 inches. Good condition – some wear and folds, but very legible. less

Taylor, Gordon (1893-1971) , Carl Van Vechten, foreword. BORN TO BE
$1,500.00New York: Covici Friede, 1929. First printing. An eloquent book in which this African-American singer, one of the foremost spiritual / blues singers of his day,  recounts his childhood in the ‘sporting world’ in Sulfur Springs, Montana (where his family was the only black family), his experiences as  a Pullman porter, working as a driver for John Ringling, being in New York during the years now called the ‘Harlem Renaissance’  and traveling to Europe to sing. Written at the peak of his singing career, during which  he partnered with Rosalind Johnson (sister of James Weldon Johnson), this ends with his comments on “what a lucky bird I am to have been laid on the top of the Rocky Mountains.” Long after the events in this book, he returned to Sulfer Springs for the remainder of his life.  Illustrated with a color frontispiece and 9 black and white plates by Covarrubias; includes an introduction by Muriel Draper, who talks about editing the original handwritten manuscript, and a foreword by Carl Van Vechten. An important book of the Harlem Renaissance era which is scarce in the first edition and rare in dust jacket. Glossary. 235 pp.  Very good in brown cloth with orange lettering – slight spine slant, some wear to the top of the spine – in a good only example of the Covarrubias illustrated dust jacket, with shallow chipping to the edges, sunning to the spine, but complete.  less
