Oxford; The Theatre, 1683. A handsome and well preserved copy of The Homilies in this less common Oxford imprint of 1683. Volume runs from title page to Finis, complete, with additional 4pp of The 39 Articles Of Religion to rear. Chain of ownership from 1728 to 1977Â is noted in various hands to fep. A short inscription is written at the head of the preface page, noting the edition. Minor ink notation to the Table Of The Sermons (ie. index), but no further marks or annotations. Text is in VG order with no tears or repairs, though some toning to stock as expected. There is some damp staining to the upper right corner from circa p.250 onwards, but this is not too intrusive. Minor worm damage with two small holes at foot of page running almost the entirety of the book. Heavy boards firmly bound in full leather, with five raised bands to spine and red leather titlepiece. Leather well worn, esp to edges, with some surface loss, but not unappealing and likely contemporary or nearso to publication. This is a charity sale for Friends Of Morston Church (reg.1099831). Folio. [6] 388pp [4].

$750.00[22], 392, [21]; No publisher: (Aberdeen?), 1678. Rebound with leather spine, red label lettered in gilt; most of original calf laid down on later leather covered boards; new pastedowns and endpapers; a fragment of original leaf (endpaper? ) laid down on front pastedown with ownership description: “Francis Newton Book, given Him at London by His Brother, John Newton,” below which is written “Robert Shepherd, Book 1803″. The last leaf also has further ownership inscriptions on both sides, dated 1755, some in Latin. Top edge of the text block seems to have been shaved in rebinding, as all of the copies located are listed as quarto, this copy 8″ x 6”. Title page soiled, stained with edges heavily chipped, somewhat fragile at the hinge with loss at the top but holding. Dedication page soiled and chipped, with autograph inscriptions on top corner margin in a small hand by Francis Newton, dated 1709, then Robert Shepherd, Stockport, 1779. Leaves 5&6 are separating from the hinge but holding firm below at several stiches. The rest of the text pages soiled particularly at the margins. There is a closed 1.25″ horizontal split at the leading margin on (p. 7) of the Tables in the rear. The last leaf has 1.5″ even loss across the top. Fair condition thus, but the binding is of course tight, and the whole pretty well preserved. less

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi [Mahatma]; Edited by D.G. Tendulkar; M. Chalapathi Rau; et al. A Word for the Readers by Mohandas Gandhi; Introduction by Jawaharlal Nehru
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi [Mahatma]; Edited by D.G. Tendulkar; M. Chalapathi Rau; et al. A Word for the Readers by Mohandas Gandhi; Introduction by Jawaharlal Nehru Gandhiji: His Life and Work Published on His 75th Birthday, October 2, 1944
$1,250.00Bombay: Keshav Bhikaji Dhawale, 1944. Hardcover. 4to., 405 pp. Original publisher’s light brown coarse khaki cloth with dark brown leather spine, gilt lettering, patterned endpapers, illustrated with black and white photographs and tipped-in color plates, frontispiece.  First unabridged edition of this tribute to Gandhi, with introductions by Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru and a biographical essay by Albert Einstein.  Published in 1944 to both commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s 75th birthday and support the Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Fund.  Contains essays by various contemporaries examining Gandh’s political career, social reform efforts, and influence on Indian society as well as a curated selection of Gandhi’s own writings, including speeches and letters. Although Gandhi generally declined to participate in birthday commemorations, he wrote a preface for this volume, citing its charitable purpose. As a mid-career publication released during Gandhi’s lifetime, the book reflects the contemporary reception of his work and offers early interpretations of his role in the Indian independence movement.  Published in India in 1944 to mark Mahatma Gandhi’s seventy-fifth birthday, Gandhiji: His Life and Work stands as one of the earliest comprehensive tributes to the spiritual and political leader of India’s independence movement. Issued before independence and while Gandhi was still alive, this commemorative volume documents his philosophy of non-violence, his leadership during the freedom struggle, and the global recognition of his influence.  Copies of this edition are scarce, particularly in well-preserved condition, as many were printed under wartime paper constraints. A significant historical document from the final years of British India—offering both biographical insight and period authenticity.  Very Good, intact with some age toning, soiling, handling and wear. Institutional ownership stamp on title page. Item #726202511  less
