Booth Tarkington, E. Harris Harbison, Erdman Harris, Eric Barnouw, et al Princeton University – The Triangle Club: Three Early Musical Scores, 1919–1928
$750.00Cincinnati and Princeton: The John Church Company and The Triangle Club of Princeton University, 1919-1928. 4to., 77 pp., 49 pp., 55 pp. Three volumes. Original pictorial wrappers. All very good or better copies, showing only mild wear and handling.  A rare trio of early Princeton University Triangle Club musical scores, documenting one of America’s oldest and most storied collegiate theatrical traditions. Founded in 1891 [evolving from the earlier Princeton Dramatic Association], the Triangle Club quickly became a cultural institution—known for its original musical comedies, cross-country tours, and alumni who would go on to shape the American stage and screen.  Included here are:  The Hon. Julius Caesar [1919] – a ‘travesty with music’ revised by John Biggs, with lyrics by Erdman Harris, F. Warburton Guilbert, Booth Tarkington, Post Wheeler, and Edward Hope. OCLC records only three institutional holdings.  Napoleon Passes [1927] – music and lyrics by E. Harris Harbison, Frank A. Baker, Austin P. Leland, and others. OCLC lists just seven copies worldwide.  Zuider Zee [1928] – lyrics by Erik Barnouw and Joshua Logan. Logan, later a celebrated Broadway and Hollywood director (South Pacific, Mister Roberts), performed in this production, which toured major U.S. cities. OCLC notes only two holdings.  Together, these volumes form a vivid snapshot of Jazz Age Princeton’s creative life between the wars, when Triangle productions launched the early careers of figures like Booth Tarkington, Logan, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Jimmy Stewart.  Their scarcity—each title surviving in only a handful of libraries—underscores both their ephemeral nature and their growing appeal to collectors of American collegiate theatre and cultural ephemera.  Condition ranges from Very Good to Near Fine, with minor edgewear or small ownership marks noted. A handsome and historically important ensemble, seldom offered together, tracing the formative decades of Princeton’s legendary Triangle Club. less

Scott, Dred
Scott, Dred Report of the Decision of the Supreme Court of the United States And the Opinions of the Judges Thereof in the Case of Dred Scott Versus John F. A. Sandford. December Term, 1856
$495.00Gene W. Baade Books on the West
Washington DC: Benjamin C. Howard, 1857. First Thus. Soft cover. Poor. Item #2507047 1857 Washington printing said to be issued at or about the same time as the New York edition. Original string-tied printed wraps. LACKING ORIGINAL PAPER COVERS, TITLE PAGE, AND LAST LEAF (page 239) the last two of which have been replaced by your bookseller as new pages. In this famous and convoluted case Scott, a slave who had also lived in free Wisconsin Territory and Illinois, sued for his freedom (as did his wife). A lower court in Missouri ruled in his favor. This ruling was reversed by the Missouri Supreme Court, whereupon Scott appealed to the US Supreme Court where he lost in a 7-2 decision when the winds of slavery politics blew to smithereens the up-to-then accepted “doctrine” that, “once free” (as in having lived in a free state or territory), “always free.” This decision has come down through US history as one of the biggest failures of the US Supreme Court. As noted above, the title page is missing. I have supplied. cutting to proper dimension, a modern page of the same, which is laid in. This copy is also missing the last page (p.339), but I have supplied the entire text of the last page and also cut it to proper dimension and laid it in. Otherwise the copy, string-tied as noted, has water tidelines upper half of the first leaf, which tideline extends to a decreasing degree into the 63pps. Clarity of readability is not compromised. Quite minor foxing to a few margins. Minor edge chipping to first and last pages. To be obviously handled with care, but a quite serviceable reading copy if you desire this text in its original form pps (3) – 228. Very scarce. This document in book form is #68 in the famed Grolier Club’s One Hundred Influential American Books Printed before 1900 published in 1947. less

New York State Board of Health
New York State Board of Health LIST OF MAPS OF SEWER SYSTEMS AND SEWAGE DISPOSAL WORKS New York State towns, 10 towns
$2,500.00Gene W. Baade Books on the West
Albany? State of New York? 1895. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Item #SHEL2027 Unrecorded portfolio unless found in town and state archives. This is a portfolio 0f 32 maps (complete set) of approved sewage plans for ten towns and villages in New York. The maps of varying sizes up to approx 40″ x 40+” are folded to octavo size and gathered in a string-tied folder titled in gilt on the spine, STATE BOARD (device) HEALTH SEVENTEENTH ANNUAL REPORT. The approval dates printed on maps range from June 30, 1896 to December 31, 1896. Printed on the maps is approval information with printed signatures of officials signing off on them; also printed is/are firm(s) producing them who presumably are doing the work. I cannot be exact on the source information (construction firms) on each map because I have only opened 4-5 of the maps due to the tricky nature of opening particularly the huge maps and not tearing the folds as the paper is somewhat thin. The towns and villages represented are: Oneida, Nyack, City of Mount Vernon, (Vernon Park District), North Tarrytown, Tonawanda, New Hartford, Pelham Manor, Cooperstown, Geneva, Waverly, Clayton, Jamaica, Sandy Hill, Depew. We see that, at least in some cases, perhaps most, only certain sections of the town or village has plans, and several towns have more than one map. As to condition, here are but a few short tears in what did open, slight splitting at some folds and fold intersections. The cloth portfolio is vg+. For any collector, researcher, or city doing research on what appear to be original sewage systems in these ten towns, this is a gold mine of information. Some maps even have piping sizes. Streets and streams and canals, etc. are shown on most maps. An extraordinarily rare set of infrastructure maps. less

John Williams
John Williams The Redeemed Captive Returning to Zion or a Faithful History of Remarkable Occurrences in the Captivity and Deliverance of Mr. John Williams
$350.00Greenfield, Mass.: John Dickman, 1800. 6th Edition, with Additions (see note below on printing). Binding: Hardcover (Full Leather). Book Condition: Very Good Condition. Size: 16 mo (6-7″). 248 pages. Rev. Williams was among those captured in an Indian raid on Deerfield, Massachusetts Bay Colony, Feb. 29, 1703/4. Upon his return, he wrote an autobiographical account of his captivity and return which went through eight printings over the next century (though Dickson labels this ninth printing as the “6th Edition, with Additions”). Although most of the content here was taken from earlier Boston printings, Dickman added Taylor’s chronology in his earlier 1793 “Fourth” edition and Taylor’s new “Historical Sketch of Deerfield” is first published here. Note that the date on the title page is 1800 but Taylor’s note about his appendix is dated as Jan. 1st, 1802 (p. 198). Sabin lists the publication date as “MDCCC [i.e., 1802]” based upon Taylor’s date (Vol. 28, p. 424). Besides Williams’ account (pp. 1-125), this printing includes five additions: 1) A sermon Williams preached at Boston in 1706 upon his return (pp. 127-148); 2) An appendix by Williams’ son Stephen who was also captured, recording the names of those taken, those killed in the raid and a chronology of “this mischief done by the enemy in Deerfield, from the beginning of its settlement to the death of” his father in 1729 (pp. 149-158); 3) An appendix sent to the publisher by Rev. John Taylor of Deerfield who continues the chronology of the “mischief done by the enemy, in Deerfield” from 1729 “to the conclusion of the last French War” (pp. 159-197) as well as his new “Historical Sketch of Deerfield” (pp. 197-220); 4) “Some Observations” by Rev. T[homas] Prince of the Old South Church in Boston, originally published in the 3rd edition providing some biographical information about John Williams (pp. 220-224) and 5) “A Sermon delivered in the first parish in Springfield, on the 16th of October, 1775 just one hundred years from the burning of the town by the Indians” (with the running head of “A Century Sermon”) preached by Rev. Robert Beck of Springfield (225-248). Hardcover bound in leather over boards with red morocco title panel marked “REDEEM’D CAPTIVE” in gilt. Corners are bowed with three worn through to the boards. The leather has lost its finish along the top edges and head and foot and along the hinges of the spine. The front end paper is split at the gutter, exposing the cords, but the binding is tight. The pages are tanned from age but unmarked. There is light foxing scattered throughout and a tide mark in the top quarter of the rear free end papers and last two leaves of the text. The original owner’s inscription is on the front free end paper: “Neh Randalls Property Bought August 25th 1805 at Worthington (Mass)” At the bottom is a more recent ownership inscription in purple pencil: “Fred from Ralph” and what appears to be “O K, Eva.” On the inside front cover is an oval stamp: “Private Library of F. G. Simpson No.” with the number 5 written in. less
