Great Plains or Western Harvest Photo Exceptional
$250.00
n.p: n.p., 1900. Original. Hardcover. Fine.
FABULOUS but unidentified photo of frontier haying (we presume) camp. 7 3/16″ x 9 ¾” b/w photo mounted on black 9″ x 11 x ¾” mat. This is a remarkably descriptive and sharp photo of either a group of men and women gathered in front of what appears to be a traveling cook house, with some sitting on a wagon. In the doorway of the cookhouse are two women, well-dressed for the photo, wearing caps. Among the group of 25 boys, men, and one young girl is, third from the left, the gentleman who we presume is probably the owner / manager / boss / ramrod. Is he checking up on the progress of what is going on? The man third from right appears to be African-American. The girl in the photo, also wearing a woman’s work cap, sits on the shoulders of a couple of guys. The apparel in this photo includes overalls, trousers with suspenders, wide-brimmed hats, and jackets. They all appear to have clean faces, so maybe they are washed up for dinner? The romantic historian in me wants to know who they are, where they are, and what they have been doing. The landscape in the distance appears to show a field with a harvest cut line running across it. It is hard to say if the objects in the mid-distance on the right are hay shocks. A treasure if you can handle the mystery. Near fine condition. Photo to be uploaded or upon request.

Scott, Dred
Scott, Dred Report of the Decision of the Supreme Court of the United States And the Opinions of the Judges Thereof in the Case of Dred Scott Versus John F. A. Sandford. December Term, 1856

Washington DC: Benjamin C. Howard, 1857. First Thus. Soft cover. Poor. Item #2507047 1857 Washington printing said to be issued at or about the same time as the New York edition. Original string-tied printed wraps. LACKING ORIGINAL PAPER COVERS, TITLE PAGE, AND LAST LEAF (page 239) the last two of which have been replaced by your bookseller as new pages. In this famous and convoluted case Scott, a slave who had also lived in free Wisconsin Territory and Illinois, sued for his freedom (as did his wife). A lower court in Missouri ruled in his favor. This ruling was reversed by the Missouri Supreme Court, whereupon Scott appealed to the US Supreme Court where he lost in a 7-2 decision when the winds of slavery politics blew to smithereens the up-to-then accepted “doctrine” that, “once free” (as in having lived in a free state or territory), “always free.” This decision has come down through US history as one of the biggest failures of the US Supreme Court. As noted above, the title page is missing. I have supplied. cutting to proper dimension, a modern page of the same, which is laid in. This copy is also missing the last page (p.339), but I have supplied the entire text of the last page and also cut it to proper dimension and laid it in. Otherwise the copy, string-tied as noted, has water tidelines upper half of the first leaf, which tideline extends to a decreasing degree into the 63pps. Clarity of readability is not compromised. Quite minor foxing to a few margins. Minor edge chipping to first and last pages. To be obviously handled with care, but a quite serviceable reading copy if you desire this text in its original form pps (3) – 228. Very scarce. This document in book form is #68 in the famed Grolier Club’s One Hundred Influential American Books Printed before 1900 published in 1947. less

Foreword by H.K. Ramsey, Imperial Kligrapp
Foreword by H.K. Ramsey, Imperial Kligrapp Proceedings of the Second Imperial Klonvokation Held in Kansas City, Missouri Sept. 23, 24, 25 and 26, 1924
$800.00Atlanta: Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, 1924. Softcover. 8vo. Very scarce report of the second Klonvokation, which was held every two years. Very Good in lightly soiled wraps and with covers slightly pulled away from staples. Item #39236  It was reported that there were 2,000 men and 3,000 concomitants present at the Kansas City meeting recorded here, which was held at the Kansas City Convention Center in Kansas City, Missouri. This Klan meeting was held behind closed doors and a card and a password were necessary to gain admittance. Only Klansmen with courtesy cards were allowed to view the proceedings. What was published about the proceedings came through the Klan publicity office.  The meeting was opened by the Grand Dragon of Nebraska. The Imperial Wizard, Dr. Hiram Wesley Evans of Atlanta delivered a message to the Klonvocation on the state of the Empire:  ‘This Klonvocation, held here in the great Middle West, is assembled on the battlefield of the immediate future…some of the Eastern states are today lost to true Americanism and must be rewon; but the great American population of the Middle West, of the South and of the Southwest are left to do valiant battle…you are leaders in the only movement in the world, at present, which exists solely to establish a civilization that will insure these things…history has proved, and is proving daily that only Nordic and Anglo-Saxon peoples have reached a high level of intelligence.’  Rare record of an early 20th century KKK gathering. Gideon, D. C.
Gideon, D. C. INDIAN TERRITORY Descriptive Biographical and Genealogical including the Landed Estates, County Seats Etc., Etc. with a General History of the Territory in One Volume
$1,996.00Gene W. Baade Books on the West
NYC and Chicago: Lewis, 1901. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Item #2206028 1st printing. Beautifully rebound in three-quarter leather and cloth with gilt titles (slightly flaked) on spine and with new endpapers. 956pp. 100 photogravure portraits plus several other photos. A. E. G. (all edges gilt). Originally owned by and with the signature (three times) of “H. S. Suggs, Berwyn I. T.” The second Suggs signature was on a chipped sheet & in rebinding the binder affixed it to a sheet of matching tone and bound it in. The third signature of Mr. Suggs is written along the inner margin of where he is in the book (pps. 580-581). Suggs “… came to Berwyn in the Indian Territory, where he continued in the lumber business [from Texas] and also ran a cotton gin until 1901, when he sold his gin and is now engaged in the hardware and lumber business . . . he is interested [also] in the cattle business, and firm being known as Suggs and Brother.” The brother, Sidney Suggs, has an even longer entry in the volume and a portrait. A glossy photo of him and his family is laid in. It is printed from the archives of the Okla Hist Soc. One leaf (pps 931-932) was once detached but has been tipped back in. It has tears radiating out from the gutter and has 3 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ inch loss of text in the middle of the page. Title page has two edge chips. One index sheet has old cloth tape edge repairs. Throughout there are some edge tears that have not been repaired, but we have discovered none of a serious nature. Many tissue guards are missing. There is some browning/foxing on some pages, but not extensively. Some page corners are rounded from use. We have conservatively graded this copy “good,” but in our view with experience in these kinds of volumes, if it were in our personal collection we would have no issue grading it very good. Adams (Six-guns 1107) says, “Has a long section on all the outlaws of the Indian Territory, including the Dalton gang and the Cook gang …” [but Adams adds the author is mistaken about Belle Starr’s brother & repeats false information about her]. In this section there is glowing information on the famous Black Man, Deputy. U. S. Marshal Bass Reeves, and an account of one of his captures of outlaws involving gunplay. An Oklahoma rarity.
