Tucson, AZ: Suzanne Moore, 2024. Original Wrappers. Fine binding. Item #9704
Folio. [26] pp., illus. Limited edition, one of 26 lettered variants. Lettered and signed by Moore. Bound in Cave paper wrappers with gold tooling, with an original piece of process art laid into a paper folder, all housed in clamshell. The latest in a remarkable body of work by Suzanne Moore, this artist’s book employs printing by polymer plates by Sandy Tilcock at lone goose press as well as handset vintage type by Jessica Spring at Springtide Press. Original work—collage, embossing, gilding, and hand coloring in pencil and gouache—by Moore assures that each of the 26 lettered copies are variants, not identical.
The overarching vision of this book is an artistic and philosophical exploration of the letter “Q.” Moore writes, “Q is key to Latin words of inquiry, and questions inspire conversation, idea exchange and research. This book was designed as an antidote to Q-Anon, and reminder that there is power in the act of questions—and listening with an open mind. Through sincere questioning, consideration, and conversation we can move to otherwise impossible connections—and new levels of understanding.” Interspersed throughout Moore’s lettering are printed questions offered by Moore and her friends. These range from playful to poetic, from intimate and deeply personal to grand considerations of the Nature of Things. The one commonality is that none of these questions are easily answered, if answerable at all; but all are worth consideration.
Among the most impactful aspects of Moore’s book is the profound and relentless way in which she demonstrates that even simple concepts can be so much more than they seem. She takes the letter Q, as straightforward a letterform as any, and gives it more than a hundred iterations from humble to breathtakingly dynamic. If something as simple as a letterform can be so much more complicated and varied while retaining its identity . . . is nothing fixed, decided, solid? And in that question, we are brought back to Moore’s central proposition: “Through sincere questioning, consideration, and conversation we can move to otherwise impossible connections—and new levels of understanding.” An important proposition at a time where intractability is the sentiment du jour. A stunning and inimitable book.

Paine, Albert Bigelow (1861–1937)
Paine, Albert Bigelow (1861–1937) MARK TWAIN: A Biography; The Personal and Literary Life of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, [Three Volumes – Complete] THE BIOGRAPHER WHO KNEW HIM BEST
$750.00Published only two years after Mark Twain’s death, this monumental three-volume biography by Albert Bigelow Paine remains one of the foundational sources for understanding Samuel Langhorne Clemens. Paine enjoyed unprecedented access to Twain’s personal papers, correspondence, unpublished manuscripts, and family recollections, allowing him to produce the first comprehensive account of the author’s life, literary development, travels, friendships, and public career. More than a biography, the work presents a vivid portrait of nineteenth-century American literary culture. Paine captures Twain’s rise from Mississippi river pilot and frontier journalist to international celebrity, while preserving anecdotes, letters, and observations unavailable elsewhere. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Three volumes. Handsomely bound in half red morocco over complementary marbled boards with matching marbled endpapers. Five raised spine bands with gilt-stamped titles and decorative devices. Top edges gilt. Octavo format. Illustrated throughout with photographs, facsimiles, and portraits. An attractive early twentieth-century custom binding well suited for both library and display. CONDITION: No flaws or blemishes beyond minimal shelf handling. A particularly handsome set in bright red morocco with fresh gilt, clean boards, and well-preserved marbled endpapers. Still Gift Quality. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE —Paine’s biography presents the most influential early account of Mark Twain’s life and career. Drawing upon years of personal friendship and literary collaboration, the author reconstructs Twain’s childhood in Missouri, his years on the Mississippi River, western journalism, world travels, family life, financial reverses, lecture tours, and emergence as one of the defining voices of American literature. The work reflects the transition from nineteenth-century America into the modern literary age. Alongside discussions of major works such as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, and The Innocents Abroad, Paine preserves valuable firsthand observations that later biographers frequently relied upon. The result is both an important reference work and a richly readable literary biography. Numerous film, television, and theatrical adaptations have been drawn from Twain’s writings, particularly The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, ensuring the continued cultural influence of the author whose life is chronicled here. Albert Bigelow Paine served as Mark Twain’s literary executor and enjoyed unusual access to the author’s private papers. Published shortly after Twain’s death in 1910, this biography helped shape public understanding of Twain for generations and remains a cornerstone of Twain scholarship. Britton, Coburn (1901–1996)
Britton, Coburn (1901–1996) Cap with Bells [Dolmen Press] [Limited Edition of 320 Copies] [Illustrated by Harry Kernoff & Noel Sheridan] A BEAUTIFUL, NEAR-FINE SPECIMEN OF POST-WAR DUBLIN TYPOGRAPHY AND GRAPHIC ILLUSTRATION, MARKING THE LITERARY DEBUT OF COBURN BRITTON.
$450.00This beautifully preserved copy of Coburn Britton’s poetic suite represents the author’s very first published book, issued as one of only 320 copies by Liam Miller’s legendary Dolmen Press. Serving as a foundational example of post-war Irish book design, this slim volume single-handedly resurrected fine printing in Ireland, filling the void left by the pre-war Dun Emer and Cuala Presses. The landmark collaborative production features striking modernist woodcuts by celebrated Dublin artist Harry Kernoff alongside fluid ink washes by abstract painter Noel Sheridan. It represents a deliberate bridge between the traditional Irish book arts revival and the mid-century avant-garde, capturing a moment when independent typography matched international fine-press aesthetics. KEY FEATURES+++ Visuals: Illustrated throughout with bold, expressionistic black-and-white woodcuts by Harry Kernoff and complementary textured ink washes by Noel Sheridan. The front wrap features an striking Kernoff woodcut printed in red. +++ Binding: Original cream-colored stiff card-stock stapled wrappers with the printed outer paper covers pasted over the spine line. +++ Content: The complete text of Britton’s introspective poetry, including his focal seasonal piece, Three Christmas Bells. +++ Imprint: Dublin, Ireland: The Dolmen Press, November 1959. Limited First Edition. +++ Specs: 5.25 by 7.5 inches; unpaginated text block [2 blank, 2, 7-38, 1, 1 blank]. LIMITATION: This volume represents the complete first and only printing of this collection. As stated in the colophon on the final printed page, the edition was strictly limited to a small press run of only 320 copies printed on fine paper at the Dolmen Press, Dublin, before the type was distributed. CONDITION: Near Fine. The stapled card wrappers remain firm, square, and structurally secure, with no splitting or pulling along the pasted-over outer paper spine. The interior pages are exceptionally clean, bright, and completely free of thumbing, foxing, or owner inscriptions. The delicate cream-colored outer wrappers show only minimal, uniform shelf handling and very minor, faint smudging to the rear panel, consistent with standard storage. A collection-grade survival of a fragile, small-press pamphlet. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: THE DOLMEN PRESS AND MODERN IRISH BOOK ARTS—A REVIVAL OF IRISH FINE PRINTING.Founded in Dublin in 1951 by architect, designer, and publisher Liam Miller, The Dolmen Press became one of the most influential forces in the revival of modern Irish fine printing. The press provided an important home for Irish poets, artists, and writers whose work benefited from careful design, illustration, and craftsmanship beyond the requirements of conventional commercial publishing. POETRY OF THE POST-INDEPENDENCE GENERATION.This 1959 edition of Cap with Bells reflects the collaborative spirit that defined Dolmen’s early achievement. Coburn Britton’s poetry belongs to a generation of Irish writers exploring personal, spiritual, and emotional landscapes in the decades following independence. Through familiar religious and seasonal imagery, Britton transforms traditional forms into intimate reflections on memory, belief, and human experience. LITERATURE AND VISUAL ART IN COLLABORATION.The volume also demonstrates Dolmen Press’s commitment to the integration of literature and visual art. Harry Kernoff, a major figure in twentieth-century Irish art, contributes bold structural woodcuts, while Noel Sheridan provides complementary abstract imagery that expands the emotional atmosphere of the poems. Together with Liam Miller’s careful typography and production choices, these elements create a unified work of mid-century Irish book art. A DOCUMENT OF IRISH CULTURAL RENEWAL.Cap with Bells stands as an important example of the cultural renewal taking place in Dublin during the postwar period, when independent presses played a central role in preserving and advancing Ireland’s literary and artistic traditions. SCHOLARLY FEATURES+++ The Dolmen Press Impact: Illustrates the early, defining design philosophy of Liam Miller, who founded the press in 1951 to rescue Irish book production from aesthetic stagnation by pairing fine typography with local artists.+++ Artistic Modernism: Features the graphic work of Harry Kernoff (1900–1974), a pivotal figure in 20th-century Irish art who famously captured Dublin’s working-class urban landscape and contributed immensely to the visual culture of the post-revival period.+++ Post-Revival Narrative: Documents the shifting landscape of Irish literature in the 1950s, where writers moved away from the nationalist and political themes of the earlier Irish Literary Revival toward deeply introspective, spiritual, and personal exploration. SUBJECTS: Coburn Britton, Harry Kernoff, Noel Sheridan, Liam Miller, Dolmen Press, Irish Literature, Irish Art, Modernist Woodcuts, Fine Press Movement, Dublin Publishing, Limited Edition, Poetry, Illustrated Book, Small Press Multiple.
