Minor bumping to edges. Light fading to spine as well as light soiling to boards. Minor foxing to interior though text is bright and mostly clean. Browning and foxing to several of the plates and protective pages while many remain bright with only minor foxing. Many pages remain uncut. Binding is Very tight. From the estate of Betty Washington Whiting, direct descendant of Martha Washington, with family tree and photo copy of estate auction notice laid in. Also includes a printed note explaining that the book formerly belonged to Martha Washington’s daughter Eleanor Parke Custis Lewis along with a list of other copies of the title available for sale at the time. Appendix, 503 pages + 16 pages of publisher’s ads.

Finely bound brown leather covered boards with beautiful gilt and blind stamped decoration to boards and gilt title and decoration to spine. Minor bumping to spine ends and corners. Minor discoloration to leather on spine and around the edges and very lightly to a few small areas on the boards. Very light rubbing. Book reads right to left and what would be back to front in English. Includes text in both Hebrew and English. Ownership inscription to front free end paper and Art Deco book plate to rear free end paper. Minor chipping to edges of end papers. Browning to rear interior hinge where rear free end paper was once attached with tape. The page has now been correctly tipped in. Hinges are starting though binding remains tight and strong. Minor foxing throughout though text remains bright. Tape repairs to small closed tears on margins of four pages. The bottom corner of page 181/182 is torn off which affects a small amount of text, as pictured. Original ribbon bookmark is present but no longer bound in. Else is clean and bright. Gilt-edged pages. Includes eighteen pages of songs and what appears to be one random page from a Haggadah bound in at the rear.

Mexican devotional broadside, early 19th century

[Mexico]: c. 1800. Broadside. Item #10303 Broadside. 8-3/8″ x 6-1/8.” Prayer on recto only, inside of an ornamental border; verso blank. Remarkable copy with only trivial edgewear and toning to the deckle. This was printed 2 per sheet and trimmed, a portion of the original watermark (a bull) is visible on the cut edge. While there is no imprint, the cataloguer at the John Carter Brown Library identifies this a 19th century Mexican imprint. We have followed suit with confidence, and after a physical inspection of the laid paper, believe this is fairly early-19th century, possibly late 18th. A prayer by Pope Benedict XIII, asking before death one have a chance for repentance, hence “Para alcanzar de Dios la gracia de no morir de muerte repentina.” A wonderful talisman noting before the prayer that those who are unable to read should keep it with them every day and say a Hail Mary: “Los que no supieren leer, las traerán consigo, y rezarán todos los dias una Ave Marie.” There is at least one Spanish variant of this, with imprint and dated in 1758, according to OCLC. None of these ephemeral broadsides are common in institutions or in commerce. Not recorded in the standard bibliographies.

Signed and inscribed by Niebuhr, adding “I try in this volume to explain that the meaning of life for the individual and the whole of mankind is found in the love as it is revealed in Christ.” An important and revealing copy of this landmark of twentieth-century thought. Exploring the complexities of human nature and the philosophical and theological implications of humanity’s existence, the Nature and Destiny of Man was rated number 18 of the Modern Library’s Top 100 Nonfiction works in the 20th century. “A collection of theological lectures delivered by Niebuhr in 1939, The Nature and Destiny of Man tackles the Christian concept of human nature, the powerlessness of man, and Christianity’s impact on human history. Delivered just before the outbreak of World War II, these lectures were so influential that Cold War containment policies and aspects of realpolitik can be traced back to them. Size: 8″-9″ – Octavo (8vo). 88 pages (64 p., 24 p.). In bringing together his earlier work, Willard’s sermon and an update in his appendix, Sewall marshals the evidence for his position that the Millennium is near and that the discovery and Christianizing of America is a crucial and perhaps final development to that end. Drawing from prophetic passages describing the coming Millennium, Sewall find significance in the discovery of the Americas as the final remaining area to be found. He also sees the New World as a logical place for the New Jerusalem to be established. Drawing upon others, including Manasseh Ben Israel, who speculated that the native Americans were the remnants of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel, Sewall writes, “God’s removing Israel out of his sight, is no less than three times mentioned; which may insinuate the Remoteness of that Land, into which God by his Providence intended to cast them. And none was no remote, and so much out of sight, as America” (p. 41). The summary description for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Digital Commons provides this assessment: “Often misunderstood, Phænomena illustrates the intricate connection between prophetic exegesis and New England politics, between eschatological speculations and self-representation and policies toward the Indian populations of North America.” Rebound in leather over boards, the leather paneled with a line embossed around the borders of the front and rear cover. Spine scored to give the effect of four compartments. Laid paper has been used for the replacement end papers. Text block is tight. The first two leaves (title page for Sewell and address to Sir William Ashhurst) are printed in facsimile on laid paper and trimmed slightly smaller on the outside edge as the original pages. The original text begins at Sig. B (p. [iii]). There are three holes in the outside margin of that leaf, affecting two of the marginal notes on the recto and another hole on p. 43 in the middle of the page. There is a tide mark on pp. [iii] to 52 and 57-62. Any prefatory pages for Willard’s work have not been reprinted here; the pages go directly from the last page of Sewell to the first of Willard’s. Although the two works are paginated separately, the signatures are continuous (Sewall ends with Sig. S and Willard begins with Sig. T). Willard’s pamphlet is followed by an appendix written by Sewall. The last two leaves of the appendix to Willard’s pamphlet have been strengthened at the edges with paper tape. Both of the pages are missing their upper corner. The page edges are slightly browned.
