Goble, Paul (1933-2017)
Goble, Paul (1933-2017) THE GIRL WHO LOVED WILD HORSES.
$600.00
Scarsdale NY: Bradbury Press, (1978) First printing in first issue dust jacket.
A beautiful and unique copy of this Caldecott winning book by this author and artist, who was known for his children’s books which chronicled the stories of Great Plains groups, including the Lakota, Cheyenne, Blackfoot and Crow peoples. Although born and raised in England, Goble commented that “From early childhood, I always wanted to know more, and to see the country and wildlife with which the lives and beliefs of Native Americans were so closely interwoven.” After several summers spent in the US, in 1977 Goble came to live in the Black Hills of South Dakota and spent the rest of his life there.
Shortly after moving to the United States, this book won the Caldecott Medal in 1979 as the year’s best-illustrated book for children. In 1991, the American Indian LIbrary Association recommended all of his books, commenting that he “flawlessly captures the flavor of Indian humor and the easy blend of cultures so common in contemporary Indian America, and so lacking in the works of other authors.”
This copy is INSCRIBED on the dedication page by one of the two dedicatees – “for Bonnie, who loves horses.” (The other dedicatee was Janet, who later became his wife – and Bonnie’s name was removed from later printings of this title)
Very near fine in tan cloth with a small line drawing on the front cover in a dust jacket with just very minor edgewear, no award sticker.

Samuel Sewall; Samuel Willard
Samuel Sewall; Samuel Willard Phaenomena Quaedam Apocalyptica ad Aspectum Novi Orbis Configura; (with) The Fountain Opened Or, some few Lines towards a description of the New Heaven As It makes to those who stand upon the New Earth
$1,250.00Boston: Printed by Bartholomew Green, 1727. Second Edition (with additional material). Binding: Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good Condition, with two leaves printed in facsimile. Size: 8″-9″ – Octavo (8vo). 88 pages (64 p., 24 p.). In bringing together his earlier work, Willard’s sermon and an update in his appendix, Sewall marshals the evidence for his position that the Millennium is near and that the discovery and Christianizing of America is a crucial and perhaps final development to that end. Drawing from prophetic passages describing the coming Millennium, Sewall find significance in the discovery of the Americas as the final remaining area to be found. He also sees the New World as a logical place for the New Jerusalem to be established. Drawing upon others, including Manasseh Ben Israel, who speculated that the native Americans were the remnants of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel, Sewall writes, “God’s removing Israel out of his sight, is no less than three times mentioned; which may insinuate the Remoteness of that Land, into which God by his Providence intended to cast them. And none was no remote, and so much out of sight, as America” (p. 41). The summary description for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Digital Commons provides this assessment: “Often misunderstood, Phænomena illustrates the intricate connection between prophetic exegesis and New England politics, between eschatological speculations and self-representation and policies toward the Indian populations of North America.” Rebound in leather over boards, the leather paneled with a line embossed around the borders of the front and rear cover. Spine scored to give the effect of four compartments. Laid paper has been used for the replacement end papers. Text block is tight. The first two leaves (title page for Sewell and address to Sir William Ashhurst) are printed in facsimile on laid paper and trimmed slightly smaller on the outside edge as the original pages. The original text begins at Sig. B (p. [iii]). There are three holes in the outside margin of that leaf, affecting two of the marginal notes on the recto and another hole on p. 43 in the middle of the page. There is a tide mark on pp. [iii] to 52 and 57-62. Any prefatory pages for Willard’s work have not been reprinted here; the pages go directly from the last page of Sewell to the first of Willard’s. Although the two works are paginated separately, the signatures are continuous (Sewall ends with Sig. S and Willard begins with Sig. T). Willard’s pamphlet is followed by an appendix written by Sewall. The last two leaves of the appendix to Willard’s pamphlet have been strengthened at the edges with paper tape. Both of the pages are missing their upper corner. The page edges are slightly browned. less

Andriessen, Pieter Jacob
Andriessen, Pieter Jacob Wat er alzoo in de wereld te zien is een aardig boek voor kinderen, met bijschriften
$1,024.00Amsterdam: G. Theod. Bom, n.d. [c. 1874]. Pictorial Wrappers. Crown 8vo (180 x 128mm): [8]pp, with six color lithographs (printed by Emrik & Binger, Haarlem), each with flaps that, when flipped, reveal a completely different image (a ship at sea becomes Bedouins in the desert, a volcano erupts into walruses in the Arctic, Native Americans transform into explorers in the Rockies), taking the viewer on a tour around the world. The accompanying text guides the reader through these twists and turns. Original burnt orange illustrated card wrappers printed in green, gold, and terracotta and lettered in black. A superbly preserved example of this fragile production, all but pristine, rare, with Worldcat Discovery listing only one copy and LHD none. Fine. For more than 700 years book designers have been pushing back the boundaries of the two-dimensional page, adding flaps and rotating parts to enhance the text, most often in scientific literature. But only in the nineteenth century did movable flaps became a regular feature in children’s books. In the Netherlands, ‘De nieuwe rijschool’ [The new riding school], published in 1856, was the first movable children’s book, which reached their peak in the 1870s and 1880s. Gerardus Theodorus Bom (1814-1884) was a Dutch publisher of books in Amsterdam, issuing such titles as Kindervreugd (1864), Robinson Crusoë (c.1865), and Kunstenmakers at work (1875). Andriessen’s first books were published under the pseudonym Pieter Jacobsz. Under his own name he wrote a series of romantic stories for young people, mainly derived from Dutch national history. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable mylar sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.
