Andrew Holleran [Eric Garber]
Andrew Holleran [Eric Garber] Dancer from the Dance
$750.00New York: William Morrow, 1978. First Edition. Hardcover. 8vo., 250 pp. A tight and clean copy with price [$9.95] intact on front flap. Item #400085.  Very nice first edition of this landmark novel in American gay literature, celebrated for its lyrical prose and haunting depiction of gay life in the 1970s. Set primarily in New York City and Fire Island, the novel follows the beautiful and idealistic Malone, a young lawyer who abandons conventional life to immerse himself in the hedonistic world of gay nightlife. Through the eyes of Sutherland, a witty and world-weary drag queen and social guide, readers experience a dazzling yet melancholy panorama of discos, bathhouses, and endless pursuit of love and beauty.  The tone is both romantic and elegiac—alternating between the ecstatic liberation of gay culture in the post-Stonewall era and a profound sense of loneliness and spiritual longing. Holleran’s prose is lush and poetic, suffused with both irony and heartbreak, capturing the fleeting joys of sexual freedom and the emotional costs that often accompanied it.  When it was published, Dancer from the Dance was among the first major novels to portray gay men’s lives openly and without apology, preceding the AIDS crisis but foreshadowing its emotional aftermath. Its mix of glamour, tragedy, and moral reflection helped establish a new voice in queer fiction and influenced generations of LGBTQ writers. The novel remains a touchstone of gay identity and self-discovery, often compared to The Great Gatsby for its depiction of beauty, excess, and yearning in a community searching for meaning amid the dance of desire.  less
