Peterkin, Julia
Peterkin, Julia SCARLET SISTER MARY.
$200.00Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, (1928) Limited, signed “airplane” edition. An interesting reminder of early aviation history and an uncommon early edition of this Pulitzer prize-winning novel set on a plantation in South Carolina and written in dialect. However, far from depicting the black people of the South with the usual stereotype, they are described as “Gullahs with tall straight bodies, and high heads filled with sense.” This airplane edition is SIGNED on a blank preliminary page at the front, with the number 674 (out of 1000) in the upper corner, printed on thin India paper and bound in lightweight, flexible boards. In the 1920s commercial passenger air travel was still in its first decade, and it was both uncomfortable and expensive as well as uncommon (the first stewardesses were not on planes until 1931) and the first mass market paperbacks would not appear until ten years later. An appealing small volume, measuring 6 3/4 inches tall, 4 1/2 inches wide, and just 3/8 inch in bulk. 345 pp. Illustrated endpapers. Very near fine in black cloth with gold panel on front cover with embossed black lettering and a small vignette of a plane in the lower left corner with the words “Airplane Edition.” less

Taizō Kuroda
Taizō Kuroda White Porcelain [Signed First Edition]
$900.00Tokyo: Amus Arts Press, 2001. 4to, 176 pp. First Edition, First Printing. Softcover with French folds and with the rare wraparound band. Profusely illustrated. In English and Japanese A superb, minimalist monograph on the work of Japanese ceramic artist Taizō Kuroda [1946–2021], celebrated for his transcendent explorations of pure white porcelain. The book captures the serene geometry, meditative presence, and ethereal light that define Kuroda’s vessels and sculptural forms. Texts and photographic plates combine to create an object that itself reflects the artist’s devotion to clarity and quiet beauty. This first edition, signed by Kuroda on the title page in black ink, is a scarce and highly desirable copy—particularly sought after following the artist’s passing and the growing recognition of his influence on contemporary Japanese ceramics. Beautifully printed on heavy matte stock, the book features rich duotone photographs that convey both the precision and the spiritual stillness of his work. Kuroda, often called the ‘master of white,’ transformed the vocabulary of porcelain into a language of light and shadow, simplicity and contemplation. His work resides in major collections worldwide, including the Musée Guimet and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. This signed volume represents the definitive printed expression of his aesthetic philosophy—an ideal addition to collections of Japanese art, ceramics, or modern design. less

Goble, Paul (1933-2017)
Goble, Paul (1933-2017) THE GIRL WHO LOVED WILD HORSES.
$600.00Scarsdale NY: Bradbury Press, (1978) First printing in first issue dust jacket. A beautiful and unique copy of this Caldecott winning book by this author and artist, who was known for his children’s books which chronicled the stories of Great Plains groups, including the Lakota, Cheyenne, Blackfoot and Crow peoples. Although born and raised in England, Goble commented that “From early childhood, I always wanted to know more, and to see the country and wildlife with which the lives and beliefs of Native Americans were so closely interwoven.” After several summers spent in the US, in 1977 Goble came to live in the Black Hills of South Dakota and spent the rest of his life there. Shortly after moving to the United States, this book won the Caldecott Medal in 1979 as the year’s best-illustrated book for children. In 1991, the American Indian LIbrary Association recommended all of his books, commenting that he “flawlessly captures the flavor of Indian humor and the easy blend of cultures so common in contemporary Indian America, and so lacking in the works of other authors.” This copy is INSCRIBED on the dedication page by one of the two dedicatees – “for Bonnie, who loves horses.” (The other dedicatee was Janet, who later became his wife – and Bonnie’s name was removed from later printings of this title) Very near fine in tan cloth with a small line drawing on the front cover in a dust jacket with just very minor edgewear, no award sticker. less
